The Anime Industry

This is an article that was passed on to me via Facebook. As a fan of anime, and a friend to many people who work in the anime industry, I urge you to read this and if you feel so inclined, pass it on. And for those of you who think that voice actors are rollin' in the money...that notion is so laughable I can't even begin to tell you how NOT ( Read more... )

Well, I would never be able to afford anime. In fact, I never got into it at all until I was able to pirate it. If the anime industry falls apart, well then, at least I was able to enjoy it while it was around. I wasn't and would not be able to otherwise. Nevertheless, I believe you are overdramaticizing the issue as people often do. To be honest, in either case, I can't help it. It's one of two choices: 1) enjoy anime, 2) do not enjoy anime.

If this is the way it will be, that is most unfortunate. But if that is the case, it is an unavoidable calamity, something I can do nothing about, nor can anyone at the present time. It's like I said. If I was in a position to support the industry, I would take pride in doing so. But I'm not. And so... I see no reason to limit myself as people of my economic status often must, especially when there are means for me to not have to with little to no risk to myself. This may sound selfish, but after a rational analysis of the situation, it benefits me and doesn't seriously hamper the industry -- my sales do not. If I was paying for anime, it would not be really much anyway. In fact, it would be none because I can't pay for it, but if I did, it would be so little that it would not even matter ( ... )

Also, I did not even consider that anime makes money from ads being aired on TV in Japan. I mean, in the US most anime is essentially an OVA. Some is aired, but most of it you have to buy on DVD. So I do very much believe it is harming the dubbing industry and the localizing industry and the shipping to the western world industry. But the Japanese industry... not so much, not enough to destroy it.
