The following letter was sent to Mr. Rupert Giles, acting head of the Watcher's Council, on July 14th, 2005, by registered mail.

Mr. Rupert Giles

To the attention of M. Rupert Giles, acting head of the Watcher's Council, and all others to whom it may concern;

It is with no small amount of regret, yet a strangely light and emboldened heart, that I hereby formally tender my resignation from the Watcher's Council, as regards both my membership and my custodianship by. I shall not serve this current leadership as either Watcher or Slayer, nor in any other capacity. My personal possessions have already been requested from the Harrington estate, and are being delivered to my eventual locale; further, my personal accounts, such as they are, have been closed off, and all funds belonging directly to the Council have been returned. I shall not be requiring nor requesting further support from the Council, in any capacity.

This is not a choice which comes easily to me, sir, nor one which I might ever have anticipated making. From the time of my birth, I have been groomed to join this august organization, to aid, shape, and support the protection of the known world from the subtle, unseen world which surrounds all men throughout the days of their mortal lives. These goals have not changed, sir; I will continue to stand, to defend, to educate, and to protect. But I can no longer condone the methods employed by the Council in this modern time, nor trust to the leadership of a man whose days of stability, sanity, success, and good judgement are so clearly behind him.

On a more personal note, M. Giles, thank you for all that you have done for my family: for not informing my brother of my continued survival, for deceit, for encouraging me to withhold information from my seniors, for permitting the nature of certain inhumane activities and experiments to go unspoken in greater Council halls, and thus undealt with on the scale which they required. Thank you for permitting the salvation of the world to come at the expense of more innocent lives than can be fully tallied. Thank you for abandoning us when we most needed you. Most of all, thank you for allowing one death, out of all the countless thousands, to disable you in the hour of our greatest necessity.

It is no wonder, studying both your actions and the scars upon my own psyche, that you have been such a role model to me.

Evelyn Mason will be remaining in my care, and will not be released to Council custody, under any circumstances which you might propose or attempt to bring about. Should you require communication with either of us, you may send it to the address enclosed below. I request that you consult the records surrounding the disappearance of M. Simon Spenser, Watcher's Council, 1951-1959, the death of Ms. Elsatia Post, Watcher's Council, 1973-1981, and the resignation of M. Alexander Healy-Wyndham, Watcher's Council, 1985-1992, before attempting to send anyone for a direct extraction of either one of us. You might find them quite enlightening.

In short, sir, and with the greatest possible respect: hate you, hate the Council, taking my Slayer, love, Geraldine.

Respectfully yrs.,

Ms. Geraldine Wilhemina Harrington
