A friend of mine once said that no matter how lame your manager is, you should cut him some slack -- after all, he's getting paid for depending on your sorry ass to get everything done. You can't blame them for being jumpy when their job is on the line on whether or not you do what you've gotta do.
Getting people to march in line and be dependable is hard -- we're not that way by our nature. At the end of it, you have to cowboy up for the bottom line and where it falls short. It's not your fault and it seriously sucks hard -- harder than the shit you put up with cleaning toilets or rolling dough.
You are better than this -- but you've gotta start somewhere. These are the experiences which are making up your life right now and you're already better off than most people. You actually give a damn about the job for as crappy as it is. You realize that even though you're dealing with spoiled customers, the business isn't running the way it ought to.
Being human in front of people isn't a crime. Showing your employees that isn't a crime. It'll serve to drive home to them how royally fucked things were.
If I could offer one minor bit of criticism -- the way you solve things isn't by being the bionic woman and getting shit done. You can't run the whole place on your own. You have to let into those people who called in and threaten their jobs -- not because you're a jerk or they don't have a good reason -- but because this is the shit that goes down when they let you down. You have to make sure that people are doing their jobs. You're not a grunt -- you're just trying to keep them in line.
Stay cool. Breathe. Walk back in for the next shift and get shit done. You know what went wrong, now show how much ass you kick by setting it all straight.
