So i deciuded to put something political on my livejournal site. I knwo it is amiss the usual depressing rants and raves, but who cares, kill me. Anyways, first I am what is commonly known as a modeerate democrat or a disenchanted lefty, because lets face it, there really isnt a left in this countr anymore. All this aside, lets talk bushy. So everyuone hates bush and he is a war monger and the killer of innocent people, right?? Well, i am not going to say how I feel about his vile domestic politics, but I do believe that he does not get enough credit for his foreign policy, which actually, isnt that new anyways. In fact, the great long lost left hero, JFK, wasnt even really a dove. He was definately a hawk. He escalated the situation in Vietnam, in fact he was assassinated three weaks after the president of South Vietnam, Diem, was assassinated. ALlegations were made that this operation was actually carried out by the United STates. Kennedy ran on a VERY STRONG anti communist/soviet union ticket. JFK lied to the american public after the cuban missile crisis, saying that the united states had sacrificed nothing to remove the missiles in cuba, when in fact we removed our missiles in turkey and we promised to not to invade cuba. Now people are calling for an impeachment over the claims of WMD's and we are suprised that a governemnt official could screw with the truth. Furthermore, unilateral action is not a new thing, nor is Bush's action purely unilateral. We have ten countries of the 15 EU backing us and eight countries have troops on the ground. We had a UN resoltuion threatening saddam hussein, it is just that wee decided not to push full force for a second reslution. The french and germans are not worried about balancing against US power as much as they were worried that the oil and weapons contracts that they had in Iraq would dissolve with a new government. The french are not the liberal, free white knoight in the world, either. THe united states is built around its institutions, not the other way around as is the case in france and Great Britain, where liberties and basic human rights were grafted gradually onto a monarch. We came to this country with our ideals of freedom, although in practice we may sometimes deviate, and then built our institutions to protect our freedoms. However, this is a very interesting and important topic that the United STates will have to come to terms with in oreder to survive. First presented by Sam huntington, the UNited STates is always experiencing a gap between policy and its ideals. We beleive in self determination and yet we invade countires. We believe in human rights, and yet we ally ourselves with some of the most inhumane figures: Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein, General Noriega, etc. The gap gets bigger and smaller depending on the way the world is, but in order to preserve this country, the United STates will ahve to come to terms with this. As I stated before, our ideals form our inst6itutions. This means that our ideals legitimize governemental power. If the gap becomes too big, our foundation for governemnert will crumble and the United States will cease to be the country that it is today.
So teh oil argument. Very popular, especially with students, however, consider this. Halliburton, which is a company that was tied to the business scandals and is tyhought to be "in bed" with the bush family originally was contracted to put out oil fires. So, why did George W. BUsh send in divisions of special forces to secure and maintiain the oil fields of iraq before hussein could ignite them? Furthermore, for US oil, such as Exxon and Texaco, to rebound in the world market, they need the price of Arab oil to increase and the supply to decrease. Ideally, this would occur in a scenarion where Hussein could have lit up his oil fields, as he did in the first persian gulf war. Why didnt Bush, wanting to protect american business, allow this to happen?
Lastly, consider Afghanistan and Iraq. Two countries which have survive terrific horrors for more than twenty years at the hands of repressive regimes. In Afghanistan, women convicted of adultery would be beaten to death in front of crowded stadiums. In Iraq, Hussein had used chemical and biolgical agents in gas attacks against his own people, in particular, the kurds of northern Iraq. FOr the first time ever, women in afghanistan can drive, go to school, not dress in vails and recieve medical attention. FOr the first time ever, consideration for the formation of a free kurdish state is a possibility. FOr the first time in twenty years, dissent is a good thing. You may argue all you want that the United STates is a power and money hungry hegemon, howeve, certain freedoms and liberties are now about to blessed upon the Iraqi people and are being soaked up by the Taliban free afghanistan. Fundamentalist gfovernements, like the soviets operate on suppressing truth and freedom from any source outside itself. Fear is the king of the day.
Believe what you will, but President Bush's foreing policy is neither new, unilateral, nor making this country the "evil empire." And, if you believe the argument about we always had saddam hussein in our pocket consider this. At the time of the Shah overthrow in Iran, both the Soviets and the United STates aided Iraq in an attempt to insure security against Iran and Khomeini. The french were the first to give nuclear technology to the Iraqi's and it was the British and the french that supplied the parts to make saddam's supergun that would have been able to launch shells all the way to Israel.
Ok lefties, after your done crying, bring it.
PS, how come during all the peace parades, all the signs said impeach bush, bush is evil and the united states kills babies. How come none of them read, free Iraq from tyranny, educate an illiterate afghanistan, save women from fundamentalist violence, or give peace to the middle east. Sweet fucking human rights oriented left...psyche.
