Man 'Beheaded' in Street Axe Attack
A man in his sixties is reported to have been beheaded during an axe attack in a north London street.
The victim was attacked in Eton Avenue, Swiss Cottage.
Police were called to the scene this morning to reports of a "serious assault in progress".
A man in his thirties was arrested at the scene and is now in custody at Holborn police station.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. The victim has yet to be formally identified.
"At this stage we believe that the victim suffered severe head injuries.''
Eton Avenue has been sealed off while detectives carry out a forensic examination of the scene.
Scotland Yard said a murder inquiry had now been launched and an incident room opened.
A London Ambulance spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that we were called shortly before 9.40am to Eton Avenue, NW3.
"We sent a rapid response car and two ambulance crews. A man was pronounced dead at the scene.''
The attack took place near Hampstead Theatre, although a spokeswoman said no one there saw the incident.
