blah blah

I think there are many times in life when I’ve asked myself, “Why am I doing this?” Last night was one of those nights in my life.

My band, Chump Change, had a gig at The 5 Spot on a Tuesday Night. We get there and no one is in the crowd. Well unless you count the other band we played with and their girlfriends and etc. We have to bring all of our equipment in, after loading it from the practice space to the club. I plug in my amp and it’s shorting out and I’m not getting any sound. I end up using a mini amp from the other band, which was cool of them, but it wasn’t the sound I’m used to from my amp. The gig goes on for about 45 minutes, which seemed much longer. We get off stage and then watch the next band do their stuff, which was really really good. That band’s name is Colossal Head. If you get a chance go see them. So I ended up getting home at around Midnight, after driving back to the practice space and unloading the equipment, and a 45 minute drive home. 5:00 am comes early in the morning!

We did get a few, “good show” comments from the crowd and “it was fun”. I appreciate those from the crowd since it shows they are at least letting us know they appreciate something about the show. Phony or not I’ll take the praise, especially after playing at a gig where I’m not even getting paid. Well the piano player from the 2nd band did tip us a dollar.

It’s not the first gig like this. Last week we played The 5 Spot to the same results, except we were the only band and we had 4 fans come out. Tip: $5.

I don’t know at times why I’m still in this band. It is fun at times, true enough, but it’s tough at times as well. I know we’re not going to make it. We can’t even get people out to the show. I know our skills are rudimentary at best. Yet I continue to do it. I think because two of my closest friends in the world are in the band. If I was playing with people I didn’t particularly care for, I would have been out a long time ago. I don’t know what the point of all this is, just a reflection I suppose.
