A Little Less Hurt
“SHE SAID YES!”
It's late afternoon but the thought still echoed in Shou's head since this morning after visiting his friend at his Alma Mater. Looking up the ceiling while lying on the cold tiled floor of his kitchen, he waited for his friend to arrive since he asked Shou to teach him how to dance.
The front door slowly opened and in came a man who eagerly went looking for Shou inside. "Shou-yan~?" he called out as he approached the kitchen. He squealed like a girl the moment he saw Shou lying on the ground behind the counter, thinking he was dead, to his surprise; the latter opened his eyes and sat up. "Good grief. You gave me quite a scare." then he helped Shou stand up from his seat.
"Oh, Hiroto. If I am dead, you will never get the chance to dance with that girl ever."
"It's running late so we better get started."
Shou asked him what time it was and it was already past 4 with the party starting at 8pm. "Give me that." he grabbed Hiroto's tuxedo from the younger boy’s arm and hanged it by a dresser in his bedroom. When he came back, he turned on some old classical music and immediately grabbed one of Hiroto's hands and started dancing the waltz with the other one's feet placed over his.
"You know... you're heavy, Hiroto-kun." Shou said in between breaths. "Try to use your own feet rather than depending on mine." but Hiroto didn't want to since he's nervous and a little concern of the thought that he'll trip over Shou.
"Come on, you don't really want to mess up... that girl's shoes, right?" Hiroto noticed how Shou would always sound sad whenever he mentions the girl he'll be partnering with tonight for their school dance. Hiroto knew that Shou still liked him even after their break up a year ago and he also knew that he still likes him back.
"It just couldn't work out.” Hiroto remembers the words Shou has told him before they ended the relationship.
”Hiroto… move… I cant carry your weight alone.” Hiroto stops his thoughts and tried following Shou’s lead all the while looking on the ground, not noticing that Shou was crying quietly so as not to ruin the mood, only realizing it a few minutes later when he saw a tear drop onto the floor. Hiroto looked up to face Shou who still couldn't control his tears from falling. Shou quickly wiped his face after the latter saw him.
"Shou... Don't cry."
"I just did. It took you long enough to realize it."
"You are the only one I knew who's good at dancing. I'm sorry... if I had hurt you because of this."
"Don't be. I'm fine now. Let's continue."
It's 6pm and luckily, Shou have successfully taught Hiroto all the things he needed to learn before the dance. They had to stop now since Hiroto needs to get ready. As he waited for him to finish, he sat by the window and looked up in the sky. The clouds were gray and it looked like it was going to rain any minute now. Even though it will mean that the party will be canceled, he didn't want it to rain. He didn't want all Hiroto's efforts to be wasted just like that. The party really means a lot to him, the girl... really means a lot to him.
"I hope it doesn't rain."
Shou was surprised by Hiroto's sudden appearance beside him. He smiled and told him that everything's going to be fine and that he should be going by now. As they approached the door, he gave him a pat on the back, told him good luck and bid him farewell. "Make her happy.” he whispered in his ear with the older man’s voice breaking yet managed to flash him a smile.
The younger man thanked him and also bid him his good bye. Shou was about to close the door but saw Hiroto just standing there a few meters away from his front porch, looking up into the starless sky. Then it started raining, Shou got an umbrella and ran to him as fast as he could, hoping that Hiroto won't get wet. Confused, he asked Hiroto why he spaced out but no response was heard.
"Here take this.” he handed him the umbrella and was about to run back to his house when Hiroto grabbed hold of his arm before he could do so. Hiroto stood on his toes and gave him a soft kiss on the cheek, in a soft whisper, he told him, "I was just thinking, my first dance was with you. Remember that."
He releases Shou's arm and waved at him as he left the man alone out in the cold, soaking wet. As Shou rubbed his kissed cheek, he finally went back inside his house assuming that Hiroto will definitely make the girl the happiest above everything. He lied down onto the floor once again, looking at the ceiling and not caring how cold his wet clothes are.
"If only I wasn’t teaching him more than just dancing, only if I wasn’t still teaching him the adventures of the people that built our nation, only if I wasn’t his professor, things would have been different and things would have still worked out."
Shou sighed, clutching his chest, a bitter smile forming on his face, “I hope she'll realize how lucky she is and how proud I am to say he was my everything…”
