OK, Vaughan is in bed sleeping peacefully after a few minutes of alternately closing his eyes sleepily and staring cheekily at me with a huge wide open grin on his face (I love that little guy so much!), the dog has been fed, the dishes have been done, and I can sit down with something to eat and KQED on the radio (KALW had some singing thing that I didn't like) and I can take some time to reply while I wait for Missy to come home from the poetry night she's at, although I should be working on an Anniversary card as our Anniversary is this Wednesday.
After 14 years I'm tired of scrutinizing everything I eat, I'm even more tired of everyone else scrutinizing everything I eat, I'm tired of answering questions and defending my choice of what to eat, I'm tired of being the awkward guy when I'm invited to eat out with friends or family. I'm just tired in general and have limited emotional energy to spare. I've been buying cheese for my wife for years, dog food for Olive, and cows' milk based formula for Vaughan (no breastfeeding for medical reasons). Don't get the idea that I've suddenly started gorging myself on Big Macs. I won't be eating much differently on the whole... ...going to pick Missy up from Bart station now, will finish later...
I hear ya, man. I'm still vegan but I feel that TIRED feeling you describe, and sometimes at restaurants I eat bread or similar things I'm not 100% sure are vegan. I still try pretty hard to stay vegan, but not as hard as a Veganator would!
Whether you are calling yourself vegan or not, if you are still eating foods that don't contain animal products...you're still vegan in my book. I agree, there's no need to be perfectly vegan to continue to consider yourself vegan. And there's no need to put a sign out to be just as effective.
Well, I've tried a few chocolate bars I was curious about, and a delicious almond croissant (if I've missed anything it's pastries, but I don't see why vegan almond croissants can't be made?), but on the whole I don't have any desire for non-vegan foods. Hidden ingredients are easily ignored by the un-zealous :) I'm mostly just tired of the hard work involved in being strictly vegan.
