The expensive side of Singapore (cars)

Jul 29, 2007 10:51

Bus trip to work $0.86
Char Kuay Teow $3.00
COE $15,000
Ford Fiesta (1.6 litre) - $54,900
Toyota Camry - $93,988
Honda CR-V (auto, 2.4 litre) $98,500
Mercedes SLK 200 - $220,888
Porsche 911 Turbo - $636,888

The Government believes that such a small island and 4 million people cannot sustain 4 million cars. They are probably right.

In order to regulate the market, imported cars are heavily taxed and owners also require a COE (certificate of entitlement) which they must bid to secure. In the last 52 weeks, the high for the COE was $18,000.

So a new car (such as the CRV) would cost at least $120k, plus insurance and on road tax. Then add fuel and maintenance and ERPs.. and.. and.. and the government keeps cars to a minimum.

So just remember, cars are always cheaper where you are, as long as you are not in Singapore.
