Personal Taste - Electric Eels

‚Personal Taste‘ - the corner that publishes artists’ music and taste. They‘re a band that has recently released their 2nd album and is busy with performance after performance. We met The Electric Eels that will cool this summer with their refreshing sounds and cheerful rhythm.

Electric Eels
Lee Hye-ji (Bass), Kim Ye-seul (Guitar), Hwang In-kyung (Vocal, Guitar), Kim Min-hyuk (Drums)

Hello.
Hye-ji: Hello. I‘m Lee Hye-ji, I play bass in the band The Electric Eels.
Ye-seul: Hello. I‘m Kim Ye-seul, I play guitar in The Electric Eels. Nice to meet you.
In-kyung: Hello. I‘m Hwang In-kyung, I‘m vocalist and guitarist in The Electric Eels.
Min-hyuk: Hello. I‘m Kim Min-hyuk, I play drums.

After 4 years you released your 2nd album. If you could choose just one song out of the album for people to listen to, which song would each of you choose and why?
Hye-ji: I chose ‚The Equator‘(적도). We expressed the feeling that we wanted to express in the 2nd album well in this song. It‘s also the title song.
Ye-seul: Just one song... That‘s quite difficult, I‘ll chose ‚Trampoline‘. It‘s a song that can be comfort for everyone who suffocates under the pressure of everyday life.
In-kyung: I choose ‚Trampoline‘ too. There was a time I went through a slump, I did not have one usable song. It‘s a song I made while overcoming this time. Making this song, it comforted myself too. It would be nice if it would become a small comfort for people listening to it.
Min-hyuk: I want them to listen to ‚Separation Moment‘! There are a lot of nice songs, but most importantly it‘s exciting to listen to!

The cover art and album title related to table tennis are interesting. How did you decide on it?
Ye-seul: We were thinking that the songs on the album were better fitting to a real photo than the illustrations we usually had. So then the idea came up to ‚shoot an album jacket with a sport that friends can enjoy together easily‘ and we worked on that idea. Actually, we got a lot of help from designer Lee Sang-hyuk and photographer Song Got, and me and Hye-ji were mainly in charge of directing the general art work.
In-kyung: We wanted to make the album jacket with an easy every-day sports theme like catchball or table tennis. Because we thought it fit with The Electric Eels music.

You said you played the last finishing guitar solo as an homage to Weezer's Buddy Holly‘s guitar riff. Do you like Weezer?
Ye-seul: Yes. I like them. In the past I also did quite some cover songs. At this point I also want to recommend ‚Blue‘ from the first album. Since it already is a famous album, I feel like I don‘t need to add an explanation. It‘s a really nice album, I listened to it often. It‘s an album that calls for beer!
In-kyung: I really, really like them. There are a lot of songs I want to recommend, if there are people getting to know them for the first time, I too think it would be best to listen to the first album ‚Blue‘. Please listen from the first track ‚My name is Jonas‘ straight through the album.
Min-hyuk: I recommend the first track ‚Don‘t Let Go‘ from the ‚Green‘ album! It‘s depressing but also exciting!!

„I listened to this album (song) and decided to make music!“
Hye-ji: I decided when I saw a band performance in a club in Hongdae for the first time. To recommend a song of them, it‘s Rocket Diary‘s ‚Now we start‘(이제부터 시작하는 거야)
Ye-seul: I bought Seo Taiji‘s ‚Ultraman‘ on tape; when I listened to it, I made up my mind ‚Ah! I want to have a rock band!‘ like this. I think it was 2nd year of Middle School...
In-kyung: I don‘t really have one. When I knew I could write songs myself, I got some kind of confidence.
Min-hyuk: I heard X Japan‘s ‚Dahlia‘ and thought I want to play the drums.

Which video did you watch with a deep impression?
Hye-ji: Wouldn‘t that be the Electric Eels new music videos... (laughter)
Ye-seul: The Black Key‘s ‚Lonely Boy‘. The image of the cheerfully dancing uncle is so cute. (laughter)
In-kyung: The On-Stage video of Zion T. The harmony of the singer and the band is so delicate, I thought it was really great.
Min-hyuk: Recently, my hobby is to watch Best of Voice of UK videos on youtube. If you watch them, there are really a lot of people who can sing well!

If there is a moment you thought that it was good that you decided to make music, when was that?
Hye-ji: It seems recently. When I make music, and share emotions with people through this music?
Ye-seul: When the audience says they liked listening to our music and that it comforted them.
In-kyung: Every year Electric Eels holds a benefit concert, ‚Power Plant of Hope‘ (희망발전소). I am happy and excited that our music can, beyond the music in itself, have a social role.
Min-hyuk: When I get the compliment that people like our music!

If you wouldn‘t be making music, what kind of life would you live now?
Hye-ji: I would want to bake bread.
Ye-seul: Well, I don‘t really know, I probably would have my own business.
In-kyung: When I watched the drama ‚Alone in Love‘ in the past, I dreamt of being a bookstore clerk like the main character was playing.
Min-hyuk: It would be less fun than I have now, but I would live richer.

„I want to play this song to the person I love!“ (Doesn‘t have to be your own one.)
Ye-seul: When I sing The Velvet Underground‘s ‚Pale Blue Eyes‘ and think of my past girlfriend, my wife will get angry, right? Anyway, I want to calmly listen to it together with her on a quietly raining day.
In-kyung: Adam Levine‘s ‚Lost Stars‘. It seems quite like a romantic song. Probably because it‘s hard to sing. (laughter)
Min-hyuk: Kim Gun-mo‘s ‚I feel Good‘.
Hye-ji: Yoo Jae-ha‘s ‚그대 내 품에’.(You in my arms)

Aside from music, what is your biggest interest right now?
Hye-ji: Bicycle.
Ye-seul: I recently purchased a small motorbike to use for a drive around the neighborhood, it‘s good for going back and forth between the workroom and the studio, but more than anything I enjoy driving a motorbike.
In-kyung: In my free time, I watch american series at home alone. Recently I watch ‚Dexter‘.
Min-hyuk: Discovering tasty restaurants.

Please tell a bit more about your interests above.
Hye-ji: I really, really like cycling. I live in Incheon, on days when I get to finish early, I go home by bike from Hongdae to Incheon. Tomorrow I’ll go to buy a new bike. Whee, so exciting!
Ye-seul: The motorbike looks like this. Isn’t it neat and pretty? Vroom vroom~ (T/N: there's a pic if you scroll down a bit here)
In-kyung: ‘Dexter’ is a drama about the main character called Dexter who is a forensic technician specializing in blood spatter pattern analysis at day and a series murderer at night. The process in which the character who can’t understand human emotions very well learns about humanity one by one, is cute but also interesting.
Min-hyuk: I discovered a tasty restaurant called ‘삼수갑산’ that’s located at the shopping district Jongno, Seoul. Recently the happiness in my life is discovering tasty restaurants.

The greatest movie or animation in your life?
Hye-ji: ‘Vanilla Sky’ and ‘Ant-man’.
Ye-seul: ‘Greatest in life’ is quite… that’s quite a responsibility, but the romantic manga ‘Honey&Clover’. It’s also the only Manga I’ve read, it’s a Manga about the youth and love stories of art students. It’s also been made into a movie, but it’s said to be boring! (Actually, it’s too sad to read the ending, so I haven’t read the last volume yet. I want to read it the next time I read it again. I want to take this opportunity and promise…!)
In-kyung: I like the animation series ‘Cowboy Bebop’. It has both wit and tragic beauty. It’s quite wonderful.
Min-hyuk: I like the movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’, and the animation ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’.

What’s your biggest deviation in life?
Hye-ji: In middle school I had 3 years of perfect attendance, was it the last day of my 3rd year, me and my friend were absent without leave and went to enjoy Shinchon. We looked around the shopping center, and sat down at the playground behind it… we really did nothing special, but because of that day I didn’t receive the award for perfect attendance. When I think about it now, it’s really disappointing. I’ll leave early without notice…
Ye-seul: The deviation I do once in one two month is that I buy cow meat and grill a steak.
In-kyung: When I was young, I was a timid child who was shivering (in fear) when I even missed grad school once. One time I skipped Taekwondo class and went with my friends on a bicycle travel, I felt both the fear and excitement of the deviance.
Min-hyuk: Making music.

The 3 items you would take onto an uninhabited island?
Hye-ji: A small boat, a paddle and 10 pieces of bread..?
Ye-seul: Paper, pen and instrument. Since I have much time alone, it’d be nice to have something to scribble on, and if I could play I’d probably be less bored.
In-kyung: Cigarettes, Alcohol, boots.
Min-hyuk: The complete collection of the 3 Nations History, a drum set, beer.

It’s a bit early, but how do you want to spend your summer holidays?
Ye-seul: I want to start in Seoul and go on a tour towards the southern sea, for now I got 3 places I want to go through which are Daejeon, to meet a friend, ‘Meadow Photography Shop’(초원 사진관), the shooting place of ‘Christmas in August’, and Paekmog port in Jindo.
In-kyung: I plan to go to Croatia with my parents. When I was young I didn’t realize that time spent with family is precious. I want it to be a holiday that’s not stressful and I can come back from comfortably rested.
Min-hyuk: I don’t have holiday plans. These holiday I’m really going to rest.
Hye-ji: Since I’m the stay-at-home type… I will have a full rest at home, or have a full rest at some recreational forest… (laughter)

Do you have a dream you want to achieve?
Hye-ji: My dream is to be a corrupt landlord. (laugher)
Ye-seul: My dream is to become happy!
In-kyung: I want to stand as looong as possible on the stage.
Min-hyuk: I want to become rich and then donate.

“Lastly, I really need to say this!”
Hye-ji: Anthony!!!
Ye-seul: If you read through this whole interview, please listen to the Electric Eels’ 2nd album. Thank you. (laughter)
In-kyung: We did well making this 2nd album.
Min-hyuk: Please purchase The Electric Eels’ 2nd album as CD!
