Whistling (Whistling), Whistling (Whistling), Dark (Dark), Dark (Dark)

...aaaaaand, after 42 hours without electricity, we're back.

It's not the longest power outage we've had to deal with--that'd be the 95-hour blackout following Hurricane Isabel's arrival back in '03--but it's the first since we moved to our current house, which has well water. And the well's pump? Electric.

Let's just say that it's one thing not to be able to see, or cook, or use wikipedia. It's quite another not to be able to flush.

It's also bad when you're blacked out in 100-degree heat. During Isabel's aftermath, the weather was pretty warm and muggy, but it was mid-September; air conditioning would have been more than welcome, I assure you, but spuffyduds and I were never forced to abandon our bed upstairs to get out of the heat. On this past Saturday night, however, with the bedroom's temperature after dark still running well above normal, we opted to crash on the futon in the basement.

We actually spent yesterday afternoon/evening with the Things, eating Jimmy John's sammiches and going to see Moonrise Kingdom (most excellent). After yielding to Thing Two's insistent demands that we watch the pilot of Breaking Bad (also excellent) in Thing One's power-equipped apartment, I checked my email and learned the power at home had been restored, but we didn't really believe it until we arrived home, turned into the driveway, and saw the lights burning.

And man, do I feel sorry for some of the people I'm hearing about in the DC area who may not get their power back until Friday.
