It's now less than a fortnight until I set off on the sleeper train north from London to Inverness for my ride from John o' Groats to Land's End. For anyone who doesn't know the UK, this is traditionally considered our longest mainland journey and goes from the northeast corner of Scotland to the southwest tip of England ( Read more... )

scotland, jogle, cycling, friends, 1000 miles to glory, it is winter

Thanks!

So how difficult will it be for me to:

a) Get an Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee PC in time to take with me.

b) Set it up for use.

I'm thinking this would be the best way for me to blog the trip - can write stuff up for later upload for times with no internet access (which will be much of the time).

Bearing in mind that I'll also have my 20GB i-river with me, I should have no problems with storage. I'm hoping wahtever OS I get on the thing will work with my mapping software.

No idea on how rare they are now, but I think Tottenham Court Road often have supplies - and you're in London, so it's a pretty good bet :-)

Setting it up - well, it comes with Open Office, which is done and dusted. Then it's just to do with getting photos onto it, edited and off it.

Well, funny you should ask that...

People have been asking anyway if I was doing anything for charity on this ride, so I decided to raise some money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute while I was at it.

People can donate here if they wish:

I'm using the justgiving site so that I don't have to collect any money myself and there's no danger of it "resting in my account" in a Father Ted style. I'll post more about this another time (especially on my climbdown vs fundraising)

Well, with the weather conditions we've been having, you might be needing the RNLI on your ride...
