thanks lj I was nowhere NEAR ready to post this 8| Anyway I have been wanting to steal this from
donereasoning for forever, but HUGE SCARY MEMESURVEY. ...AND THEN I GOT BORED :'D
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
TALL TALL TALL. Like, over six feet. He's kind of rangy, and would be skinnier than average if it weren't for the fact he is also ridiculously muscled.
2. How old is he?
Physically about twenty, chronologically 6 1/3 years old, mentally ranging from a very mature teenager to I AM SIX AND WHAT IS THIS depending on the subject.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Spine ramrod-straight, shoulders back, and chin up in a way that borderlines on aggressive. He carries himself a little too well; the only time his posture is not perfect is when he is really relaxed, or around the few people he counts as superiors (Dr. Kagamine, Gakupo-sensei). Then he ducks his head a little and generally tries to make himself smaller.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Due to his body modifications he literally cannot become ill due to infection, and he's very fit at this point (although he does show signs of recovering from having not had enough food at one point). However, his blood flow and nerves are both in poor shape; he has little sense of touch and almost no sense of proprioception (the body's ability to know what position it's in).
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Wrong. His movements are more efficient than any human's, too jerky when they start and stop and too smooth while they're ongoing. The result is a very weird, uncanny valley sort of grace. They also tend to get quicker and choppier the more tense he is. He's capable of disguising this to some extent, and at this point doing so as much as possible is second nature. He is also capable of moving without engaging any gears if he wishes to be stealthy, which reduces the effect (although it makes him look kind of ridiculous, as he has to take on weird poses).
Movements that involve fine motor control or any level of dexterity do appear clumsy, however; this is because he can't feel what he's doing.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He's pretty damn attractive, if you can look past the stitches (and scars, if you mean more than his face)! Typical tall, dark, and handsome, with strong features and a very fit body.
He thinks he's hideous. "Ugly monster" etc.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Slightly darker than average; however, large patches of it have a distinct blue-grey "dead" tinge to it. His chest and forearms are all heavily scarred, and he has stitches all over his body.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Dark blue-black, slightly coarse and scruffy. He combs it, but it tends to do what it wants and flop everywhere regardless. It's starting to get a little long.
9. What color are his eyes?
Blue-gray.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
stitchesssssss
11. What are his chief tension centers?
EVERYWHERE His jaw, upper arms, fists, and upper back.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Long-sleeved/layered t-shirts plus jeans/pants plus a beat up black denim jacket that looks like it has seen better days. Sometimes he wears a dark blue knitted scarf, too. On special occasions he'll wear the dress shirt/jacket combo seen in his PV with some slacks.
He never wears anything short sleeved, and only wears dark, tending toward neutral colors: dark blues, browns, and blacks.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Yes, and yes, for the most part. He's still a little awkward in his police uniform, but his everyday clothes are familiar to the point of being like a well-worn set of armor.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
He wears a police uniform while on-duty, and loses the jacket for his part-time job.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers, although he used to go entirely without. UNDERWEAR IS A LUXURY, OKAY.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Like
this. ...okay not really, but he comes close. His voice is deliberately/habitually pitched very deep and rumbly (partially in an attempt to mimic Gakupo, partially because he discovered it to be an effective intimidation tactic), but his natural voice is a little closer to "average Kaito".
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Quietly, and often pausing to choose his words carefully before he speaks. He will sometimes hesitate mid-sentence to provide emphasis or to choose a better word for his purposes, but unless he's freaked out he doesn't stammer.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He tends to use overly formal and occasionally archaic phrasing.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He speaks native Japanese, and understands English. He would likely be able to speak it, as well, but he'd have a terrible accent and wouldn't be very fluent at all.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
The more relaxed (around certain people) or upset he is, the less formal he gets. He also tends to lose the bass rumble at the same time.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
It depends on the situation, but he tends toward the latter. He's more prone to thinking about his words if he's worried about the other person reacting badly or if it will have other consequences if the other person misunderstands him.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Eloquent, right up until he gets upset or embarassed. THEN IT'S KEYSPAMMING AND CUTTING HIMSELF OFF AND FLAILING ALL THE WAY.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Slightly more intelligent than average, although uneducated. He is quite literally street smart, having lived on them for several years. ...He does have a good deal of knowledge downloaded to his internal database, but he cannot access it at will, and he isn't always adept at applying what it gives him.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He prefers having time to deliberate, but is more than capable of thinking on his feet when necessary.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He would like to think of himself as logical, but he tends to make decisions based off of his intuition and only applies logic afterward, if he needs an explanation for why he made that choice. (There's a reason his arguments tend to have holes in them!) He tends toward the more practical.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
None. He has a small, practical encyclopedic dictionary installed, but it only gives him information relevant to the situation/if he knows what he's asking for.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
...does "big brothering" count? He kind of wants to learn more about how to be a doctor of either the mechanical or physical variety, but what he really yearns for is to learn more about making music.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
He's become a little more cheerful and even-tempered, but he's still prone to falling into depression or lashing out at the slightest provocation. Definitely driven; if he doesn't have any sort of goal he can focus on working toward he starts driving himself crazy.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Suspicious and a little frightened. As far as he's concerned, newness and change are almost always bad news. He usually avoids people with faces he doesn't recognize for that reason.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He personally partakes in dark/gallows humor the most, and he appreciates wordplay of all kinds (even if his own talent for it is minimal). ...he's also discovering (somewhat to his own embarrassment) that he enjoys really dumb, harmless pranks.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Clinical depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and... possibly a mild form of body dismorphic disorder and mirrored self-misidentification. The last two have an organic cause that should go away with time, making it easier to treat the purely psychological components.
He attempts to self-medicate the first two via a number of (self)destructive habits, and is starting to learn how to actually discuss them/that discussing them can be effective as well.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Pre-DR: All of his murders, a good portion of his time with Gakupo, the time he was shot in the heart.
In-DR: Meeting his father, meeting and later rescuing
rollagain, getting shot by angel!Rin, defeating
donereasoning and deciding to apologize for it.
14. What does he fear?
Himself, harming the people around him, his friends learning all of what he is and abandoning him, being left alone again.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He wants to be able to make a welcome change in the lives of others. Currently, he wants to try to help
rollagain find her own happiness, and assist
donereasoning in finding some sort of peace. ...learning to be a better person would be nice, too.
On a slightly less noble scale, he wants to learn how to sing, and maybe play the guitar or the piano in addition to his recorder.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Just how much of a monster he really is. Never mind that there are a few who already know some of his worst aspects, and still accept him; he's convinced that they're just overlooking something.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
LOEV DADDY LOEV DADDY LOEV DADDY. ...in fact, he loves him a little too much, to the point where he's deliberately burying any anger or blame he feels toward Len (of which there is still quite a bit) and denying its existence. Same goes for anything he thinks might make Len upset if he told him, although at he's trying to stop doing that at Len's urging. He's also more than a little clingy and desperate and jealous of his affections.
Meiko, however, is a different story. He badly wants to like her and let her mother him, but at the same time she's still mostly a stranger, and one who showed significant dislike to him at one point. On top of that, he's still not entirely certain of her motives in making him, or of her affections in the same way he is of Len's.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Two, both Rins, the second of whom he adopted. His relationship with his "birth"
emoetionless is complicated; on the surface he's aware that he was built to be her big brother and to give her a heart; but below that, he kind of hates her. She's a competitor for their father's love, and appears to receive the lion's share without even being able to appreciate it. ...She's also kind of inflexible and too-logical and annoying. However, he's started making a concerted effort to change his views toward her, thanks to having seen what she was like with a heart; the fact that she didn't seem to hold a grudge toward him for his bad behavior only served to drive it home, and now he only wants to make sure that she has memories she can look back on and feel happy about when she recieves KOKORO for good.
He loves his
ifiwasreborn dearly, and in some ways wants her to be happy even more fiercely than he wants it for the other one. They understand each other, and she reminds him of how the darker periods of his life felt; he hopes that by being there for her, she can have the peace he was denied.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
No. Technically, none of his relatives are blood relatives.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
He thinks of
miracaretaker as something between a father and a grandfather. He loves the older man as much as he loves his father, and on some levels respects him more.
If he wasn't kind of dumb regarding his own feelings, he would be aware that he thinks of
monkeyleveled as a little brother. He wants to teach him and be of as much support as he can while the younger Kaito discovers who he is.
hesitant_toeto is another he thinks of as a younger sibling. He treasures her innocence and the fact that she was one of the first to be kind to him in the DR. Hasn't seen her in a while, though, so he assumes she's gone home. He hopes she's doing well there.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
He doesn't really consider anyone a "best" friend.
mechamikuthulu would probably be the closest, or
monkeyleveled. The first he met over the internet via chat program, the second he bumped into on the street.
...he's also got something going on with
donereasoning that has elements of trust and intimacy (at least on his side), but I would be seriously hesitant to label it with anything like friendship.
6. Does he have other close friends?
Yes,
maxedstats and
pane_dhiria.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He would say the latter, but it isn't really true (at least, in the DR). He tends to be picky about who he approaches and who he continues to associate with, though.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Family, although he doesn't make much of a distinction between the two. If you know him well enough to be considered a close friend, you may as well be family; anyone else is just an acquaintance.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single... although he does consider himself a widower, in a sense.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
...y...es? He's trying to mack on
rollagain and she's certainly not married to him except in his ~heart~
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
His first love was on the
mirakilled from his own world. His latest crush would be on
maxedstats, although he wouldn't act on it for a variety of reasons including the fact that he's in love with someone else.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He doesn't, really; love sort of ends up finding him, rather than the other way around. ...He'd like somebody he could make laugh, though.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Nope, nope, hasn't really thought about it. If he did, he'd kind of like the idea, but at the same time be acutely aware of the fact that he's far too damaged to make a good father.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Yes. The TaT!Twins are currently enemies,
treatandtrick moreso than Len.
donereasoning has fallen out of Kaito's hate; at the moment they've got something like a familiar, almost friendly antagonism going on, so I guess they'd be rivals.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Lol what sexuality. At the moment he finds both women and men equally aesthetically attractive, although he rarely consciously notices the latter because he... still doesn't really get that liking the same sex is a valid choice. GAY IS A THING THAT HAPPENS? WHAT?
Once he does get a sexuality, he'll be a 2. Some guys are just kind of nice to look at :|a
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
...it sounds kind of weird and a little gross, although he can understand that the body is wired to find it enjoyable. The intimacy sounds nice, though...
It's not really important to him at all; he's more concerned with finding someone to return his emotional affections. ...okay maybe he's curious about kissing. Really curious.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Doesn't really have any, as of the moment, but once he's got a libido he'll have a wicked oral/aural fixation. His mouth is generally where he feels things the best, and he usually uses the sounds clothes and skin make against his hands to know how much pressure he's exerting/get a vague idea of what the material he's touching feels like, so... Possibly a slight pain kink, too, since pain is just about the only sensation he can feel in most places.
He'll also probably insist on restraints/being on the bottom unless he's absolutely sure he won't injure his partner.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
He doesn't have a given birth year, so the chinese zodiac is no go; under the western zodiac he'd be a Scorpio. ...I personally don't know much about astrology and therefore can't say how accurate the results Google gave me are, but I'm seeing a lot of "moody, jealous, stubborn, passionate" type stuff that describes him pretty darn well.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Somewhat. He spent a good portion of his life believing that God had to exist; why else would his life be so terrible, if it weren't punishment for being what he was? He's still convinced that God exists (it's hard not to be when you've been shot by an angel and one of your closest friends sang to the big guy) but at the moment he's not sure how he feels beyond that. However, he's decided it isn't important as he used to believe; even if damnation or oblivion are all that wait for him, he still wants to live his life as a good person.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Yes.
miracaretaker gave him a pretty firm starting point to build off of; discarding them for several months only served to root his morals more strongly when he realized how filthy going without made him feel. A monster he may be, but he refuses to sink to humanity's habits of being cruel without just cause.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
As long as those beliefs don't bring harm to others, he doesn't care. He might be a little curious, depending on the circumstances.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He tends to assume the worst of humans, but seeing how he's been treated... Living for a few years in the worst part of town certainly didn't help.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Comfortable. His father is fairly well off, due to being a genius with mechanics and having made all sorts of advancements in that field; even if he were not, it wouldn't be a problem. He's gone most of his life without money- having any at all feels like a luxury.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He still considers himself a criminal at worst, street trash and an abomination at best, but he's aware that his standing in the DR is drastically different. Beyond that, he doesn't really think of himself as being of any particular class except "a member of the police force" when he's on duty.
...not having people immediately running away or otherwise displaying fear or aggression toward him at first sight has done wonders for his mental health, happiness, and stress levels. He actually feels safe walking around in broad daylight now, even if he is a still a little leery of the more densely populated areas.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He lives in a house with the rest of his family and his cat- their presence is what makes it "home" to him. It's pretty decent, although it required a bit of cleanup before they could move in.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Ice cream and other food items, music, movies, and books.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He currently has several part-time jobs for warehouses and the like, mostly employing his talents at heavy lifting. It's nothing great, but it doesn't require much thought or interaction with customers, and it pays enough money for the extra little things he doesn't feel comfortable wasting spending Len's money on.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He likes listening to music, watching movies, reading, sewing, and peoplewatching. He can be found doing any of those, usually in the park proper or in a little forested area attached to it if he wants a little more privacy without having to go inside.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Fairly healthy, ridiculous ice-cream addiction aside. He's mostly vegetarian, although he will eat meat on occasion out of recognition that his body does need some of the things in it. His cooking specialties are Japanese-style food and soups :|b
Much to his annoyance, he dislikes eggplant. Something about the texture... He's tried getting himself to like it on and off ever since Gakupo died, but he just can't stomach it.
