POV: Winston
Rating: PG
Summary: Winston and Jer alone in the house. An unlikely duo to have to face down the scary stalker ex.
Relatively crack! free whump. How on earth?
The carpet lay soft underneath him, familiar, warm. The underlining of the couch had just enough give to allow him to pull up his haunces, nose twitching while a car growled just outside.
It didn't matter which it was, Silent Friend or Mistress. Either one he'd pounce in a flash. He was bored and just wanted to play! Scaredy Nemesis was his favourite to pounce like this, but he'd made sure his bedroom door was shut before going to bed.
Dumb mean human anyway. Not like Winston wanted to hurt him... Okay. Maybe a little. He was loud and had sharp hair that smelled of who knows what! It wasn't natural. That was all Winston knew. Hair wasn't supposed to be like that!
He watched the doorway intently from underneath the couch, waiting, waiting.
And then the window near The Box shattered--remarkably quietly, but that wasn't the point--instead. Winston had never been so terrified ever. Okay. Maybe once in hide-and-seek with Silent Friend. The only reason he didn't shriek and bolt was because the fabric hitting his back when he jumped scared him further and caused him to freeze.
His heart hammered away faster than he'd even wanted to run. His little eyes widened within their furry mask, but the intruders didn't notice their glint under the couch.
"You sure this is the right place? Looks so... plain," questioned the man crawling through the window.
"I'm sure, Now hurry up," a female voice hissed from outside.
"Yeah yeah," grumbled the somewhat scrawny invader, first opening the door to the garage and then heading down the hall to check out the rooms before returning and opening the front door. Winston still hadn't managed to move, frozen in place.
He didn't like them. Every instinct he possessed screamed, and there was that perfect opening, letting cool air through, as soon as it was clear. Soon...
"No one else is here."
The woman from outside gave a particularly twisted grin. "Thanks. Just keep watch."
"Yeah, yeah." He settled down on the couch, feet between Winston and his oh so convenient escape.
He crept after the woman instead as she went into the occupied room. It was his nemesis in there, but he was familiar. And that meant safety right now.
Only he wasn't safe himself.
Winston knew that smell, that reaction he had to the woman waking him up by sitting on his stomach. Fear, utter paralyzing fear. Winston crept on his belly into hiding under a dresser.
"Lyd? Buh?"
"Heya Jer. I missed you."
"Y... you need to leave."
"Or what?" She laughed, taking one of his hands and patting it. "Your cousin's not here now Jer. I know he convinced you I was horrible, but you don't have to listen to him."
Jer squirmed, but the woman's legs wrapped around his torso kept him from getting free. Winston inched his way slowly closer.
This woman was clearly truly dangerous. His nemesis was a coward, but she was a predator. He could smell it, almost taste it. That confidence her prey was secured.
He didn't like her. She scared him. Scared him more than even the Gruff Giant ever had.
"I don't want this Lyd. I just want you to leave. It has nothing to do with Pear."
Her face curved into a pout, it was almost more frightening than her smiles. "He really did a number on you. It's okay though. Way I hear it, he got his."
The silent shock was a tangible thing after that and while Winston didn't understand what was said he bristled up, back arched as Jer moved. Anger burned through the fear and the boy punched Lyd, and pushed, a move that sent her sprawling to the floor with a cry.
Winston bolted back under the dresser when the other one's footsteps approached, shaking and curled up while he hurled himself at Jer, pounding on him with a whole lot more force than his frame made seem possible.
"STOP! Stop you're hurting him!" Lyd shrieked, pulling herself up from the floor and pulling at the man's shoulders.
"He hurt you!"
"Not bad. Now go. Get in the car to wait. Now!"
The two exchanged glares before the man gave Jer's ear a final cuffing and left in a huff. Winston could smell blood and it seemed to be streaming from Jer's nose.
Lyd put her arm around Jer, stroking his hair. "Oh Jer. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for him to."
Winston bristled as Jer whimpered and pulled away. "Go away Lyd... I hate you."
"No you don't, you don't. You'll see. We'll be just like we used to. Only better."
She leaned in, face resting against Jer's when Winston struck. He dug his teeth into her leg before tearing his claws into her pants to climb up.
She screamed and he screamed back, leaping to get between her and her very, very confused prey.
She didn't even stay around long enough to see what exactly happened, screaming about demon weasels while she bolted out and away.
Winston didn't relax until the smell of the intruders faded, and the squeal of tires tearing out of the driveway met his ears.
He nosed Jer's hand and for once the boy didn't flinch away.
"You saved me..."
Winston stood on his hind legs, cocking his head.
"I can't believe..."
And then the boy scooped him up, hugging him and shaking.
Nemesis no longer... and not so freaky when the hair didn't stick about like chemical laden knives.
Winston nuzzled the cheek of his Lanky Kit.
