Summer is here, and along with unpleasant heat and humidity comes the incessant cry of "OMG the weather is beautiful, let's go to the beach!"
If you think this is about beaches, you are wrong. I hate them and everyone who knows me probably knows that. Case closed.
This is about people who just love to tan.
It's foolish. Thats my view. However, knowing that opinion isn't always good enough, I've rustled up some information, as well as a couple of logical points that may actually work. here goes.
1)
The definition of tan. Even though the two processes aren't the same, there is a reason they share the same verb. Essentially, the same thing happens in both cases: the material (hide) becomes dark and tough (leather). If you think about it, you'll get it.
2) "But Mike, the sun is good for you! The skin absorbs vitamins from the suns rays!"
True. It does. However, due to the wonders of technology, we now lack parts of our atmosphere. They were there for a reason. Now you get your daily percentage of radiation along with those vitamins when you sit in the sun. Yummy.
3)"What about the sailers in the 13-15th century, and all those people that used to work on farms and stuff? They never got sick or got cancer from being outside so much."
Once again, I point out that we have cleverly removed parts of our atmosphere. Those parts, which existed in those times, blocked a large portion of the radiation in the suns rays, making it healthier for our ancestors to be outside and get all brown without also developing a series of nasty diseases.
4) "I sunbathe all the time, and my skin is still soft and beautiful. You're just jealous."
Right. Give it some time. The tanning processes wasn't an overnight thing either.
Im all done. Flame me if you will, but I will disregard it because this is the internet and I can do that kind of thing.
