Writing seems to be completely incompatible with grad school this semester, but I hope to be doing some more soon. In the meantime, here are some old-school fic recs for people looking for more reading material! Surprisingly, they're not Shitennou/senshi (which is almost exclusively what I read now in terms of SM fanfic, which I think is actually kind of a shame because these fics really stretched by mind in good ways when I was starting out), but what they have in common is that they involve a romance between the Inners and Beryl's generals! As a general warning, I should say that many of them have adult ratings/content.
Troy Silver Stanton's
Sailor Moon V: Dark Adventures are amazing. I will say the first few parts are rather interesting in how different they are. My favorite parts of this have to be the world-building for the Negaverse (and Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite all make appearances), the senshi making a mission into the Negaverse, intelligent rulers of the Negaverse (post-Beryl), and more attention to military structures and how that clashes with how the senshi operate. It's very interesting to see a male take on the SM verse, and I really like the characterizations. You quickly become invested in the original characters (non-senshi/major love interest characters), including the "baddies" in the Negaverse, which I think is actually quite difficult to pull off, and the Outers get worked in as well at a later point. There's a sprinkling of interesting elements like vampires, succubi, and other demons, but I think this is quite well-done and doesn't derail everything/detract from the main plotline. This is one of the few fics in which I quite like the Mamoru/Usagi dynamic, which is saying a lot. But mind the adult ratings!
At
Sailor Moon Expanded, I really like Mark Latus's work on the Dark Kingdom Renegades. The Calcite/Minako relationship is a wonderful foil for the Kunzite/Minako relationship, and his later pieces (in terms of timeline chronology, not sure about actual writing chronology) on marital strife in Crystal Tokyo are particularly fascinating. I also like the take in general about kids here, who are definitely not carbon copies of the parents. For Serenity/Endymion fans, Andy Comb's
Rabbit Test is also very interesting, and I have a soft spot for The
Babe Wore Blue (Mercury) and
Something About Sally (somewhat Mercury-centric as well). There are a number of talented authors on this site, not all of whose works I've read, but I remember being impressed by the more tech-savvy details in many of the fics and grittier take on romantic relationships in general.
Other than that, I'm afraid I have no fic yet for you, but wishing everyone a happy February :).
