Neurotheology on the "Sarx" and Ethics

Autobiographical memory (in our left-brain) explains who we really are on the basis of what we have done up to now. Therefore a man who copied his control center from the malfunctioning control centers of his parents might come to believe, after 80 years of life, that he is just a grumpy old man. He has always been grumpy and that is all his ( Read more... )

Well, as for why most species don't rape and pillage and kill eachother is because it's bad for the business of survival. If you have a habit of killing everyone, it's probably going to diminish your ability to reproduce safely and in sufficient numbers to keep going. Some species do kill off certain parts of their own, such as the praying mantis or some sea horses. There's evolutionary benefit to being a stable contributing member of society, and there's general detriment to the acts of theft and murder on a large scale.

As for why I don't murder, rape, or kill, there're a couple more factors. First, I generally don't have a desire to actually rape or kill anyone. Sure there are fun "Man, I am so pissed at this dude I hope he drowns in a fire" or "That lady sure is fine." but these are simply mild mental ponderings. I can't say I've ever really felt the urge to rape anyone. This is in part because of the second reason I don't do these things. I view personal liberty as an important right. People ought to be free to do what they want as long as it doesn't force others to do things. For the most part, people don't want to be raped or murdered, so you shouldn't violate their rights. Acknowledging everyone as valuable individuals, you create a boundary that prevents (morally) people from using others.

The big exception to this is when a person would violate the rights of others such as a violent criminal. In these cases, the criminal has acknowledged they do not wish to follow the rules of the system. If you do not want to play by the rules of society, you don't get to hide behind them either.

As for walking around naked without shame, lots of people can still do that. Nudity is a culturally conditioned sense of shame. For example, lots of kids run around naked when they can because they don't like being clothed. As we age, that tends to be diminished, but at the start, kids don't care about being nude. Adults condition them to it. Not everyone works this way, but there are plenty of people who don't care about being naked as adults either. African tribes, nude beaches, some people in their own home.

Well, I disagree entirely. Do you watch the news? Random acts of murder is survival? No, I call that lawlessness buddy. lols. No moral boundaries. No moral compass. There's a difference between the survival mech and selfish living. Throughout history we have seen the distruction of our own society through our untamed desires. What's to stop us? Hell, I wouldn't care, myself. Life is afterall meaningless, I have nothing to lose but it. AI is no match for natural stupidity.

So now there are rules? I thought rules didn't exist? God's law is hardly different than the law of the land. I suppose the few points people these days have issues with have to do with "tolerance."

"People ought to be free to do what they want as long as it doesn't force others to do things" "Acknowledging everyone as valuable individuals, you create a boundary that prevents (morally) people from using others."

That sounds charming but in reality it's not true at all. Tolerance does not prevent squat. Tolerance plugs your nose to the stench and allows what will be to be. Love however is bold enough to reach out past the smell and embrace or remove the stench but never, ever puts up with it. Tolerance is a sign of a sick mind when it revolves around self centeredness. It allows good or evil to happen as long as it "doesn't happen to me." What happened to the good old days when anything did not go? Well, not much got swept under grandmas rug. I for one am not gonna ignore someone who is bleeding. What kind of mentality is so self centered that all they can think about it what makes THEM feel good? Doesn't anyone have a brain anymore? Think about it.

Naked Shame warriorbride May 12 2007, 05:00:36 UTC
"Previously they had nothing to be ashamed about. There was no fear. no shame. That is how sin, evil entered the world. That's why we don't walk around naked without feeling embarrased about it. lols."

I don't know if you got my point. You said children were conditioned to feel shame about nakedness? Children from birth ARE innocent. I agree. Somethings I do think they are conditioned to feel taking thier cues from adults. But no one can give you guilt. It's something inborn. We all have a moral compass whether we choose to follow it or not. Children become aware of it the older they get and as adults confirm it in thier lives. Hence, the slacker the parents the wider and more off the "compass" is.

You can't really apply "Shame" to JUST nakedness then if it's conditioned. And then you'll have to exclude the cultural context of the other tribes who do not wear clothing as part of thier society because that's another subject entirely.

So how did the children get unconditioned from shame of nudity? Did that happen from personal liberation? Did they get unconditioned from other things as well that would have caused them guilt and sorrow (regret) if they had broken a law? How so?
