This weekend me and Karen went to a drum circle in town and have a chance to talk with some people we met at a poly meet up event from a month ago. It was a drug free event and so I wondered just how much fun it would be straight.
There were about 100+ people gathered around a large fire in concentric circles fanning out into the darkness beyond what I could see. There seemed a rule that you had to be young and hot to remain close to the fire and dance weaving your arms enfolding the night around you. I was actually surprised by the relative attractiveness of some of the people here. I always thought that Hippies had shaggy knotted hair and bore a dazed and slightly absent glaze upon their face holding hands singing kumbya.
There were a few matching that description, probably still there from the 70’s but the majority seemed a little more clean cut and employed. Perhaps these were the “Executive Hippies” Corporate whores during the day and worshipers of wilderness TV late at night. Maybe they had just been to a trendy Martini bar in town, and stopped of here on the way home, or for a little pre club high. Non the less they looked good in the fire light.
The rhythm and syncopation of the drums started to creep under the skin making it easy to sway under their influence. Then thinking that we were one of the few that came without an instrument we decided to join in the with tapodamen, drumming, matching sequences on each others backs. It was warming and relaxing to experience and fun to take part in the creation of the experience.
In the end no one we knew came to the event, well none that we could see. It would have been nice to sit and talk some with people we want to know here, but they didn’t show. After a few hours we left, and Karen’s enthusiasm for this community was explored and she dreamed of living in one of these close nit homes.
