As a capper to a great birthday three-day weekend, Sam & I went to a small birthday gathering for one of her former co-workers, who happens to have just moved to Smith St. & 3rd St. (a decent walk from our[!] apartment, though we got lucky and caught convenient G trains and took them one stop in either direction to reduce the freezing walk). We watched the Golden Globes from Joan & Melissa Rivers' nonsense all the way through to Denzel Washington's awkward goodbye, and when I got home I had to write this down. If you didn't see the broadcast tonight, I'm sure you'll hear about Larry McMurty (the co-screenwriter of Brokeback Mountain) and his bizarre paean to his typewriter. I hope to write a full-length version tomorrow, but meanwhile...
