During my first / second yr in Citi, I was staffed w/ a client company on what everyone said would be a “pain train” given the size of the potential transaction and the volume of work expected.

In 4 out of 5 years of my time in Citi, we advised you on 3 mergers and closed 2 ultimately.

During that time, despite being CEO and despite the fact that our deal team dropped like flies in the initial months, leaving just my MD and I (the clueless analyst) advising your company, you never once doubted my capabilities and always asked for my views + asked my MD to extend even the most sensitive meeting invites to me. Thank you for the tremendous opportunities / exposure you’ve provided me in the initial years of my career and thank you for the trust, always.

When the deal closed and my EMEA head called you to congratulate you, you asked him to direct his gratitude to me instead. You’ve showed nothing but kindness and generosity to me and I’m forever grateful.

When I left Citi, you offered to buy me a farewell meal when you’re back in SG despite your busy schedule. Then, you asked me about my motivations and life goals and respectfully mentioned that your team will be happy I have me join should I ever consider that option as you shared your plans of moving back to Europe to be with family after your multi year stint in Asia. However, you weren’t at all pushy, respected my choice and even congratulated me on my new role.

You were a great leader and mentor - may you rest in peace 🩶
