us, us, us, us

The room they share is small but the beds are too big at times. During these times Yesung props himself up on a pillow and reaches over for his laptop. He goes online.

“Hey,” comes Ryeowook’s voice, tinny and shy, even after all these years. “You’re still awake?”

“I couldn’t sleep. It’s negative ten thousand degrees here-is it snowing in China, too?”

“No-wait. Maybe. Let me check. Hey, is it snowing?” Pause. Henry, in the background, yells no. “No.”

“Oh.” Ryeowook hums their current single, and Yesung joins in without meaning to. He checks the weather report for Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai while they aren’t talking. No forecast of snow.

“What are you doing?” He asks after a minute has gone by.

Ryeowook muffles a yawn. “Looking up sheet music for a song. And Solitaire. What about you?”

“Not much. Waiting for you to talk.”

“Oh. Oh! Okay, let’s talk.” Hyung, gege, let’s sleep, he hears in the background. Ryeowook whispers something back, but he can’t make out the words.

“Nah, it’s late. I was just bored. You go to bed, okay? We’ll talk some other time.”

“No, it’s fine.”

“No, really. Okay, hanging up now! Goodnight.”

Yesung ends the call and surfs the net for a little bit before he hears that familiar Skype sound of an incoming call. He clicks back to the window and sees it’s from Ryeowook.

“Yeah?” He says. “Why aren’t you sleeping?”

“I just wanted to say, I miss you too. I forgot to say it earlier.” In the background Henry makes kissing sounds. Oh, shut up, Ryeowook tells him off.

Yesung laughs and then stops, making sure not to sound too pleased. “How did you know?” The question is silly, too.

“Because I know you didn’t call just to talk about the weather.”

“You sound tired. Let’s talk tomorrow, okay? Call me when you’re done with schedules.”

“Kay. Love you.”

“Me too.”

Yesung puts the laptop on the floor and crawls back into bed. He lies there feeling how large it still is, how the empty space should be filled, will be filled within days. But days stretch on.

Luckily he’s good at this waiting thing.
