My dream of running another 50K is once again dashed by my ankle. The right one, this time. I've been having trouble with it, but this past week it really got nasty, stopping me 15 minutes into a 1hr run. I wound up limping back to the house on Wednesday and grumbling to myself about it. I've had my entry in the race demoted to the 25K option, 15 miles instead of 31. Still significant, but not what I'd hoped for. The race is in a month. I'm not running for a bit to allow some healing. Not sure how I'll manage the distance if I wind up with nigh on a month off from running, but I can at least go and do as much as I can. After all, I paid the entry fee and I'm not going to have that wasted again. Dammit.
This has me contemplating a new "addiction" that will meet my endorphin addiction needs, provide a good workout to my aging body and keep me interested enough to pursue it. Swimming might seem the ticket, but I get bored in the pool and open water is rather seasonal. Cycling could do it, but it takes a lot of time on the bike to get the same amount of calorie burn as running, and dammit I like to eat!
So, I'm thinking I'll try climbing. Maybe spend a day on the climbing walls to see if it trips my fancy, and if it does I can either get an annual or a monthly pass. The plus side is, it's an all over body workout that you can take outside if you've the equipment and a partner to belay for you. The down side is, to take it outside you need a partner to belay for you.
On the other hand, it's a serious workout. All muscle groups, flexibility and strength training in one swell foop, plus the added adrenaline rush from facing my fear of heights/falling!
The climbing gym opens today at 10am. I can get a few hours in before I head to the barn... we shall see if that turns into an addiction.
