I has an owie

So, this morning I took Churchill and headed to a trail for some run time. I only took him, not wanting to wrangle both he and Connor so I could try for more distance and because, well I just didn't want to deal with both. I tripped once, picked up and got going, reminding myself to watch for trip hazards. No worries, right?

Well, I must not have been watching close enough. I fell again a good ways out when my ankle twisted under me, and this time I landed heavy on a sharp rock with my left knee. I rolled, screaming. The blood welled almost immediately. I knew I was in trouble when I first tried to stand. It took a few more tries to get up and be able to stay up, and a little longer to start walking. In the first few steps, I thought about calling for a rescue. A few more though and I thought I could at least reach the road. The trail I was running is NEVER far from the road, and I'd just passed an access trail so I had cause for confidence. Still, I saw a lot more blood than a mere scratch would account for, and that did not bode well for me. I started contemplating who to contact. It was going to be a long walk back to the car.

I made it, and after dropping Churchill off, agreed with Dreama to let her drive me to the hospital. I had tried to see how bad it was before heading home and realized it was super deep and definitely NOT to be trifled with.

I was right. They cut the tights off my leg and revealed a gash about 3" long and deep enough to see patella. No ligament or tendon damage and we're pretty sure it didn't break the little sac around the patella, but still, very deep definitely in need of stitches. I'm now on crutches and have an immobilizer on my leg to keep me from bending the knee and re-opening the wound. It hurts, too. I have painkillers though, and will take another with dinner so I can keep from screaming. This does put a bit of a kibbitz on my plans to run a 5K tomorrow, but hopefully I'll be healed enough for my triathlon in Key West. If not, I can always sit on the beach and cheer.
