SCUBA

I just completed my first full day of SCUBA instruction on the tiny island of Koh Tao off the coast of Thailand. It's absolutely beautiful here! I spent the evening lounging on the beach with some German chick, drinking giant beers for $2 and watching the molotov cocktails burn away. That's right, they fill bottles with gas, shove rags in them, and then light them on fire as they burn away on the beach. It's crazy. I kept remarking that the whole scenario was really convenient for me, 'cuz if they managed to piss me off, I could just pick up one of the molotovs, toss it into the hut, and run. I'm happy to report that never became necessary.

Thailand is absolutely amazing. And the food is even better than amazing. For $2 I get spicy curried squid with veggies over rice. I'd pay $12 for that at home, and it wouldn't taste nearly as fresh.

Today I did SCUBA into a pool. It was really amazing breathing underwater for the first time. Tomorrow I have to be at the beach at 7:30 AM to catch a boat and do my first sea dive.

I'm currently entertaining a fantasy of taking the 5-week instructor's course. Afterward, I'd be certified to teach SCUBA. I could work in Antarctica in the southern-hemisphere summer, and then in the northern-hemisphere summer I could teach diving in various exotic locales. Sounds like a pretty cool life. . . I'll wait to see how much I really enjoy the diving first.

Thailand is kind of like I imagine Mexico must have been 30 years ago. Very safe, relaxed, and amazingly cheap. I bet you'd love it here. Yes, YOU. Why don't you come visit?
