2 drabbles

Since the WH13 Last Drabble Writer Standing died out a quick death, here are my two little bites. Both are G rated and less than 500 words. VERY minor spoilers for brief dialog in S3.

Comments make me a happy lady!

Title: Fix the Fish
Words: 497
Warnings: VERY vague dialog spoilers for the “Pilot” and “The New Guy”
Disclaimer: I own nothing but I wish I did!

“Do you really have to come with me just to fix some fish?” Steve asked Myka as he hoisted the object the agents affectionately referred to as the “fish fryer” up onto his shoulder. “All the rest of you do it alone; Claudia even does it with her earbuds in.”

“So she says,” Myka replied. “I’d take that claim with a grain of salt. Anyway, nobody goes alone the first time; you need to know how to predict when they’ll strike.”

Steve took a deep, cleansing breath, using his Buddha mind to keep his annoyance in check, and followed Myka out into the Badlands. When would he stop feeling like the new guy? After about a ten minute walk, they came to a small, slightly scummy, pond that was surrounded by an electrified fence.

“That’s it? I expected some huge swordfish with actual swords or something,” said Steve, to Myka as she secured a floppy sunhat on her head.

“Oh, don’t worry, they’re nasty enough,” Myka cautioned as she pulled up her face mask, took the fryer, and aimed the coil at the pond. “Put on your gear so that you don’t get any pieces in, or on, you when I do the first one.”

“Why? What happens if I get it on me?” Steve questioned as he grimaced at his hat and mask.

“Get down!” Myka barked, interrupting his questions, and expertly shooting a fish with a sizzling beam of blue light. It hadn’t made a sound, or a ripple as it launched itself over the fence, and when it exploded, the pieces that hadn’t been vaporized, left a ring of fish guts in a circle around them.

“They’re very stealthy,” Myka explained, and turned to hand Steve the laser. “Oh, crap,” she spat as she saw that he hadn’t gotten himself covered in time, and was now beginning to have trouble breathing oxygen, and that his skin was growing scales.

Steve’s mouth puckered, and his hands began to flap at his sides, as he fell to the dusty ground. Myka heaved an exasperated sigh, and reached under her collar to pull out a small golden whistle that was on her necklace. She blew softly, and a tinkling, wind-chime like sound carried swiftly across the open field.

Before he could gasp again, Steve saw the air next to Myka shimmer, and a huge, blindingly white horse, with a single glowing horn, appeared. Myka rolled her eyes, and gestured at Steve who now gasped for two reasons.

The unicorn walked over, and gently touched Steve’s nose with its horn. The effect was immediate; he took a deep breath, and watched as Myka fed the unicorn a rainbow sugar cube before it shimmered away again.

“Now I will believe that there are unicorns,” Steve panted as he flaked a few remaining scales off his forearms.

“Just wait until you meet the Abominable Snowman this winter,” Myka sighed, helping him to his feet. “That one takes three of us.”

Title: One Down, One To Avoid
Word Count: 155
Characters: Claudia with an Artie reference
Warning: TINY spoiler for Past Imperfect

Claudia had been doing adult things well before she was an adult; her troubled childhood had seen to that. She’d retreated into cyber space as a refuge where she could remain age and location anonymous, and it had rewarded her by offering an entire underground world and economy in which she could flourish in.

Now, however, she was in the real world, working a legit job, and still constantly trying to prove her worth. So, there was one adult thing that she just couldn’t avoid any longer.
Glancing over her shoulder at the IRS badge that hung on a hook by the card catalog, part of her standard cover in town, she sighed and turned back to the seemingly endless tax forms on the screen of her laptop.

“I wish that Artie really was paying me in Monopoly money,” she grumbled as she resigned herself to a piece of adulthood that she’d rather do without.
