Season 2 Rewatch and Review: For the Team - Reset

Jul 11, 2011 20:30

Sorry this took so long but I've been busy. In order to get this out before the Season 3 premiere, had to write a mini-review for each ep. So here you go - here's reviews for the rest of the season!

For the Team

This has to be my favorite episode of S2 (I’m not joking about that - I’ve watched it at least 10 times), partly because I love that Claudia gets part of the main story in this ep. and it shows her growth as a character, partly because I’m a fan of the H.G./Myka ship and partly because of the little sister/big sister relationship that we see grow between Myka and Claudia. It’s been shown in small snippets throughout the seasons, but here it’s in full display. It’s shown through Myka’s reverse psychology techniques, and her badass mode once Claudia’s life is threatened.

This episode also introduces one of my fav. recurring characters: Vanessa Calder, who matches Artie’s hyper and impatient attitude with her calm one. She’s the yin to Artie’s yang and I love the way she interacts with Artie not only in this ep., but with Claudia in “Buried.”

Notes
  • Fun Fact: In the podcast they say this was originally going to be a swimming ep., but for budget reasons they changed it to wrestling.
  • I’m betting that Pete managed to get 8 croissants in his mouth. What do you guys think?
  • I WANT THAT GRAPPLING GUN.
  • Nice special effects on Allison’s skin - that bubbling thing actually looked creepy.
  • Artie growing back his appendix to get Doc. Vanessa to see him - sweet/creepy.
Compared to Season 1, Episode 7: Implosion

While “Implosion” was a good ep., I still love this ep. for the fact that it features my two fav. characters and humorous storylines. “For the Team” for the win.

Merge With Caution

This is the last strictly humorous ep. for the season - the rest are pretty dark. While I love the cast of “Warehouse 13” when they’re doing drama, I think were they really excel is the comedy. That’s pretty evident here as they all go wild during this ep.: Joanne and Eddie doing their best impressions of each other, Saul acts like a man in very embarrassing love. In a way, Claudia and Artie do a role reversal here, too: Claudia has to be the straight man to Artie’s antics this time. We see her grow as an agent even more as she doesn’t call for help but seems determined to figure it out on her own.

Notes
  • Recalling Artie and Claudia’s use of handcuffs for the first time they met for their first mission together (that isn’t an assist to Pete or Myka and isn’t in the Warehouse) is a nice touch
  • Joanne Kelly stole Pete and Myka’s story line, I feel, with her impression of Pete. By the way, I’ve heard people saying she did Pete’s “Hey, hey, hey” line, but I’ve never caught that, no matter how many times I watch the ep. Where is it?
  • “You went for it dude, that’s cool...” Best line of the ep.
  •
Compared to Season 1, Episode 8: Duped

While “Merge With Caution” was hilarious, “Duped” had more character development and an evil Myka. “Duped” wins.

Vendetta

I’m always fond of episodes that gives us more info about the characters, so I liked Vendetta. Nice to see more on Artie and his reasons for giving away artifacts and joining the Warehouse. I hope to see Ivan come back as a villain later, as I think there’s a lot of untapped potential within him - a man whose soul is partly gone. Unfortunately, I found Claudia and Todd’s plot line to be out of place in such a serious episode - at least the way it ended up. If Todd had been working for someone trying to hurt the Warehouse then it would have worked better with the tone of the episode, but as it turned out the fact that Todd was completely innocent was too boring and light for this ep. Please, please Claudia, don’t go wasting our time in S3 by looking for him, unless it leads to a more interesting plot line of you trying to outwit gangsters.

Notes
  • I am glad that the Todd thing was wrapped up because every episode I would think he was behind the artifacts causing trouble. I was certain he was working with MacPherson or H.G. Wells.
  • Myka and H.G. yelling at Pete simultaneously is hilarious
  • I’m slightly perturbed that Claudia didn’t get to go to Russia, because it seems like every time a part of Artie’s past comes up, she’s gone. I’d like to see her have some more participation since she and Artie are close. However, I know it would have been overkill to have Artie, H.G., Pete, Myka and Claudia in Russia.

Compared to Season 1, Episode 9: Regrets

I liked “Regrets” more because I liked both the A and B plot in that ep., while I didn’t like the B plot of Claudia and Todd in the ep. So “Regrets” is the better episode in my opinion.

Where and When

A nice episode that resolves the episode with H.G. and Artie, and gives us a chance to see the Warehouse in earlier times. I feel a lot of people have been extremely hard on Artie for not accepting H.G. immediately, I would like to point out that 1. H.G. Wells killed his best friend - even though he was evil and Artie knew he had to be stopped, it still doesn’t make it easier, 2. Artie’s seen some agents turn evil, case in point: MacPherson, so he knew that it was a possibility H.G. was evil, 3. Artie is a paranoid person to begin with. Artie eventually did come to terms with H.G. joining team, and even apologized to Myka and Pete in a deleted scenes on the DVD (thanks to geekgirl113). I feel like it was, again, a character acting unlikable, but who needed to to stay in character. If Artie had accepted H.G. it would have been out of character and bad writing.

Notes
  • “Get your ass to Mars!” I only recently watched that movie and understoo what the heck Pete was talking about. Ah, Total Recall, good cheesy fun.
  • Rebecca coming back was great - and I adored the ending, sad and romantic at the same time.
  • The concept that you couldn’t change the past was a nice change for time travel on television.

Compared to Season 1, Episode 10: Breakdown

I liked “Breakdown” more simply because it’s just plain fun. The fan in me simply loves every bit of it, from the Warehouse gooery nearly sucking in Claudia to the intro of the Regents. So “Breakdown” is the winning episode.

Buried

The Indiana Jones/CGI bonzana episode, this ep. began to wrap the season up with some big reveals: H.G.’s bisexual (and a traitor, but you know, who really cares about that?), Claudia’s the next Mrs. F and Pete loves Kelly. Oh, and Valda dies, but considering that he died in a super mystical pyramid, I’m guessing he won’t be dead for long. I really want him to come back as a new villain - “Around the Bend” played with the idea of Valda as the bad guy and I think it would be great. C’mon S3!

Notes
  • Why did they have to kill Valda? Why couldn’t they have killed a random Regent that knew all about Warehouse 2? Did they think it would be tragic or something to see Valda die? BEcause while I’m sad about the missed potential, we never really got hat much time with the character himself.
  • Dr. Vanessa returns in this ep., and apparently she’s got a tight bond with Mrs. F. I also love the way she tries to get Claudia to become the new Caretaker. She doesn’t scream or yell, she calmly tells Claudia and gently begins to encourage her to fulfill her destiny.
  • It is like Pete to realize he loves a woman by saying he would give her the bigger half of the dessert.

Compared to Season 1, Episode 11: Nevermore

I liked “Nevermore” more simply because it used less C.G.I. Sorry, but it got to the point in “Buried” where it seemed like the C.G.I. was taking away from the story. It was very close, but the C.G.I. clinched it for me.

Reset

It’s the season finale and H.G.’s plan to restart the world to make it better was a little out of left field. I appreciate that they tried to go a different route from “I’m in pain so I just want to destroy the world” and made H.G.’s way to improve the world, not just destroy it (well, she wanted to destroy it and then improve it). However it feels like the writers started out with H.G. in one direction and then changed their minds. Earlier on in the season she was giving hints that she had been unjustly Bronzed and wanted revenge, and we find out in Vendetta that she asked to be Bronzed and now just wants to help improve the world (in a destructive way). Myka leaving the Warehouse made me depressed, but even as i watched the ep., I knew she was coming back. I wish she hadn’t left the Warehouse at the end of the season, but again, I’d rather disagree with her actions than have Myka out of character. And this definitely felt true to her character.

I would like to comment on Claudia and Artie. I loved their scene at the end of the episode, where he told her it’d take a long time to get rid of him. But I think that the beginning of the ep., where he promises she won’t have to be Caretaker if she doesn’t consent is a huge lie. My theory is that it’ll blow up in his face this season. While I understand that Artie just wants to comfort and protect her, Claudia has issues with being lied to, which will create some nice conflict with those two.

Notes
  • Why does Artie always get hurt in his left shoulder?
  • Insane Kelly does not match up to insane Pete from “Around the Bend.”
  • I’m glad to see Kelly leave, as I want less time devoted to the romantic arcs in S3, but she was a good actress and developed a nice character.

Compared to Season 1, Episode 13: MacPherson

MacPherson was the better episode, simply because he was a truly evil villain that you could get behind. Also, in the last minutes of the show he blew up Artie. H.G. was a lost soul that I (and some other fans) felt sorry for. And in the final minutes...Myka leaves the Warehouse. MacPherson was simply a more epic episode.
