Chapter 10: Gone
"Claudia!" Artie said as he ran towards her. He could briefly hear Myka's scream for Claudia also, but it sounded miles away instead of just meters.
He finally reached Claudia, kneeling down beside her. A large hole from the Tesla had burnt its way into her jacket, smoldering and black. He felt his stomach flip and turned her over - her face was pale white and her eyes were closed.
"Claudia." He said, roughly patting her cheek. 'Please wake up please wake up please wake up please wake up...' "Claudia." He said, roughly shaking her body. "Claudia!"
*
"CLAUDIA!" Myka screamed as she watched Claudia's body raise up into the air, illuminated and shocked by the bolt from the Tesla. She watch motionless as Artie ran over to Claudia, flipping her over and trying to awaken her.
"Myk... What happened?" Pete said, trying to sit up, slurring his words. Myka didn't say anything but just buried her head into his shoulder. He put one hand on her head.
*
"Hmmm... What a waste." MacPherson whispered to himself as he watched Arthur roughly shake his progte. Shrugging to himself, he tucked his Tesla back in his pocket, feeling a twinge of regret. Claudia could have been great with him. "That much talent."
"It is, isn't it, James?" He froze for a second and then turned around. Mrs. Frederic was standing in front of him with her bodyguard and that insufferable Leena. The girl wasn't staring at him though, trying to read his aura, she only had eyes for the scene ahead. Tears were in her eyes as she took in the firely landscape, Myka and Pete huddled together, Artie crouched over Claudia.
"Honestly James. I never thought you'd stoop to this level. Murdering that girl. Just a few years ago, she was child."
"But she was Artie's." Leena said in a whisper. "That's what bugged you so much, isn't it. That Artie had something you never could have. You knew she would never help you, so you would have to kill her."
"Does my aura say all that?" MacPherson said, smirking at her.

Myka looked up from her position on Pete's shoulder to see Mrs. Frederic, Leena and Mrs. Frederic's bodyguard standing together. MacPherson had At that moment, Mrs. Frederic's bodyguard pulled out a gun and handcuffs. MacPherson grabbed his Tesla and shot the bodyguard in the chest. He collapsed to the ground and MacPherson ran. But he fell just as suddenly as the bodyguard did - Mrs. Frederic's three shots from the gun piercing through his body.
But Myka didn't have time to care about MacPherson as she helped Pete to his feet and they hobbled to where Artie was holding Claudia. He seemed to have given up on waking her up, and Myka felt her heart break as he held her, his body crouched over her like he was trying to protect her from any further dangers. She thought she heard soft sobs, but they were so quiet that they could have been a figment of her imagination.
Mrs. Frederic came up to stand next to Myka, the gun still in her hand. She looked down on Artie and Claudia. She touched Artie on his shoulder.
"Arthur." She said in a quiet, but still stern, voice. When he didn't turn around, she called his name again. "Arthur. Let me look at her."
She put her hand gently on his shoulder and gently pushed him away from Claudia's body. Bending down, she touched Claudia's neck, then wrists, feeling for a pulse. Then Mrs. Frederic turned to Leena.
"She's fading. Fast. Do you think you can manage it?"
"I'll try." Leena's voice was shaky and scared, but she began to walk towards Claudia. Myka looked at both Artie and Pete. Pete looked like he had no idea what was going on, like she did, and Artie looked heartbroken and nervous.
Leena took a deep breath and closed her eyes.

When Leena opened her eyes again, she was on the shore of a beach. The sky was a light, cloudy gray turning darker by the minute, and the waves were a murky bluish gray. She walked slowly up the beach, towards the speck of red she saw sitting on a rock. As she got closer, the red speck turned into the hair of a young woman.
"Claudia." Leena said, and it was only then that Claudia turned her head.
"Leena. What are you doing here? What happened to MacPherson?" Claudia said. "Where are we?"
"Claudia, I don't have much time to explain. You need to do everything that I tell you, alright?" Leena said in a steady voice.
"Okay." Claudia took a deep breath. "Okay."
"Good. Now, I want you to close you eyes and Claudia!" Leena said as Claudia closed her eyes and then promptly opened one again to peek, "Close...Good...Now, I want you concentrate on your family, your friends, Pete, Myka, Joshua..." Leena said.
*
Claudia kept her eyes closed, focusing on the people she loved: funny Pete, calm Leena, kind Myka, loving Joshua...Artie... She was distracted when she felt cold water touching her ankles. She opened her eyes in shock and began to panic as she saw the water rapidly rising - rising far too fast than it should be. In seconds, it was all the way up to her knees.
"Um...Leena?" She said. "Is this supposed to be happening?"
Leena looked around nervously. "I don't know." She looked at Claudia and her eyes were full of shock and fear. "I think it might be too late." Something in her tone made Claudia's body fill with fear.
Claudia clutched at Leena's arm desperately. "Don't leave me." She said in a small voice. Leena looked down at Claudia's ring-covered hand on her arm and when she looked back into Claudia's eyes, she had a determined look on her face.
"I won't." She said, putting her hand over Claudia's.
*
"Artie...Mrs. Frederic what's happening?" Myka screamed as she watched Leena and Claudia's bodies convulsing at the same time.
"I don't know." Mrs. Frederic actually looked...scared. She was staring at Leena, "She should have been out of there by now."
"Mrs. Frederic!" Myka panicked as she cold water suddenly began to drip from Claudia's hair, mouth, skin... It looked like had come from nowhere, it had just appeared...

"Leena what's going on?" Claudia screamed as desperately treaded water.
"I think your body's winning!" Leena shouted.
"WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?" Claudia screamed in a panic as she was ducked under the water by a wave.
"Claudia, listen to me!" Leena shouted, swimming over to her. "You nearly died because MacPherson hit you with a bolt from the Tesla! Your body wants to give out, but your mind doesn't! This is your mind's version of fighting back!"
"So how do I survive?" Claudia yelled desperately.
"You have to get to the shore!" Leena yelled back.
"What are you talking about? We are on the shore!"
"Are you so sure?" Leena asked quietly. Claudia looked around her, and the over her shoulder. Somehow, they were in the middle of what looked like an ocean, with the shore just a small, sand colored line in the distance.
"But - How - We were on the shore when the water started!" Claudia said.
"The mind works in odd ways, Claudia." Leena said calmly. "Now save your energy for swimming." And with that, she ducked below the waves and began to swim in the direction of shore.
"What kind of drugs did I take?" Claudia moaned before slipping beneath the waves and beginning to swim towards the shore.
