Swimming Lessons

Penny just recently completed swim lessons at the SHARC (Shute Park Aquatic and Recreation Center). Given that she's an infant (or maybe a toddler at this point), she was in the most basic class, which is called "Angelfish".

Overall, I would say the class went pretty well. It's really more about water acclimation then it is about swimming since the babies are held by their parents at all times. Penny's always loved the water and is eager to take baths or stick her hands under running water at sinks, in fountains or wherever she can find it. One of her challenges was getting comfortable being on her back with part of her head in the water. She did get better with the being on her back position, but there's still a ways to go.

I hope this marks the first in a long series of swimming lessons for her. When she's 18-months-old she can enroll in the "Blowfish class, which is similar, but with a bit more immersion. I want her to be a proficient swimmer and comfortable in open water, and if need by, competent enough to help somebody else out. Being there with her at the swim lesson reminded me of my days at the Juniper Aquatic Center in Bend, and all those fun summer days of doing the open swim and then sometimes playing the X-Men Arcade game in the lobby. I hope that we can set her up to have those sorts of memories.
