New York. Unseasonably warm. And so far seen through exhaustion. Until this morning, when my lovely host Claudine took me downstairs to her café - it's practically in her apartment block - and I woke up in style by means of coffee and something called a chocolate croissant bread pudding. Oh, it was good. There is little better than really really wanting breakfast. And then really really savouring it.
Claudine lives on the Lower East Side. This means two things so far: Lots of smelly fishy bin bags full of stuff piled on the street late at night because of the Chinese restaurants; and this morning, in glorious sunshine, a Chinese woman over the road, standing in front of the pretty Philippine church, hula-hooping. Completely unselfconsciously and without fanfare. She just stood there, barely moved her hips, and hooped for half an hour.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going shopping. Credit crunch?
