To All The People We've Snarked Before: A Cautionary Note

Before I start, let me give a special mention to lurkythespork, who made the suggestion to convert this speech from a comment into a seperate post. Also, thank you to the Almighty Mod for giving the all-clear.

If you're reading this, you're probably one of three things: A member of warcraftsues, an interested third party, or a person who has had ( Read more... )

You... uh.. shoot. Let me caffeinate, then I'll have something sarcastic to say about your RP.

(Not really. She's awesome. :D)

And this was a really great post. I hope someone that comes here, hurting and angry, will read it and understand what the community is really about.

Excellent writeup, and one that I think needs to be stickied somewhere for all to see. I really do think it's a pity that many can't see a criticism of their writing as anything but of one of themselves; their immediate response is along the lines of, "I wrote it, so of course you're criticizing me!" What others looking at them sometimes forget is that most of these people aren't writers by trade, nor have they had some form of lessoning for it. I'm not at all saying that only those with writing experience or training can write good flags -- there are many bestsellers on store bookshelves that could have been prevented by a good teacher, after all -- only that sometimes the person's ignorance of it is visible and those giving critique forget this small detail.

And that's exactly the reason I enjoy this community so much. There are some really knowledgeable people here, especially regarding lore, and it's helpful for a new RPer to see why certain things are impossible in lore, or extremely difficult to do well.

Thank you so much to everybody for the feedback. I certainly hope this makes some sort of a difference in the amount of dramallamas, and while I hate to get all self-advertising, I agree that it might be a good idea to get this or something like it stickied. Incidentally, I'm very honored by the suggestion, and I'm glad that you guys liked my speech.

A link to When Sues Attack or sticking it in a similar manner would not go amiss as well.

Agreed. If there's a way to put these in a sidebar or something, that would be excellent.

That's a good point; I'd forgotten that mechanic.
