Real ID

There seems to be a lot of fuss and misinformation about the Real ID thing. Here are some things to keep in mind.
TL;DR: What it do. )

It's sad because this is easily a service I'd use if it wasn't constructed the way it has been.

I wouldn't get too discouraged -- this is not likely to be the final version of the system. We'll probably see some major changes to it.

The parental controls are the ability to prevent Real ID from working at all. There's no official page on it, but I've seen people talking about that when they updated the parental controls.

Right now my RealID isn't working at all. At one point I was using parental controls to reduce my play time. But Battle.net is down so I can't check and see if that's the root cause of the problem. >.

I don't get the fuss of it then if it shows the same information your facebook does to others who don't have you friended and it's a mutual adding thing going on.

it's a valid sort of fuss, imo fawnuh June 23 2010, 06:05:53 UTC
1. Pressure by guilds and friends to use the system
2. Not everyone uses their real name on social networking for various reasons (including, yes, stalkers)
3. Not everyone wants their e-friends to know their last name
4. There is not an option to use a fake name
5. I cannot control who my friend is a friend of. They are probably an awesome person, however they may have just friended a creepy asshole who now has my real name.

These are valid concerns, and valid reasons to not use the program as it currently stands (also not everyone uses Facebook btw because of simlar concerns).

Plus...

- I don't like it when everyone can see all my characters on all realms just by adding the one. I don't feel like being guilted or otherwise nagged into heroics or pug-raids when I'm running around on my 'secret alt hunter' to relax and play around and RP a bit.

That sort of thing is really the only misgiving I have about it, but I also am not adding everyone I know to mine. Right now I have four folks on my realID, one of whom sits five feet away from me IRL when playing WoW. :) There will be a couple more added, but I trust all of these people to not guilt/nag me if I say I don't want to do something.

Except the guy who sits near me, he's a pest...

Anyway, I'd say perhaps just say you don't want your name easily available to people in WoW, and cite the "friend of friend" thing? Good luck, either way.

Since I know you can see Flag RSPs across factions (and this probably applies to other mods too), I can't wait to start seeing "This character speaks all languages, Real ID friend me with MarySueTranslator@email.com to communicate!"

If done WELL and handled properly, I can see some people making this kind of thing work, but like most Mary Sue features, there will be 50 bad RPers using it to every 1 good RPer using it.

I actually enjoy the Real ID thing. Because I only give my email to the people who are actual friends who I know and trust, whose names I already knew to begin with.

While people can see my name on their lists, it's not like I care. They don't know who I am. I trust the people I added, and I believe people have to realize when they're adding people; the people you add aren't supposed to be people you would 'hide' from.
