I spent all afternoon yesterday at the DC Convention Center with my bellydance friends. Our company had been invited to perform at the Travel Expo's Global Beats stage. We were to go on twice. Our set consisted of a couple solos, an ATS (American Tribal Style) piece, and a few group peices. There were four of us in my group and we did a piece we danced half a year ago- a lovely lovely choreography that I was thrilled to revisit. That piece felt so good to dance. We danced our first set around 2 and were supposed to go on again at 3:30, but everything ran late and then a group from the Bahamas jumped in front of us and held the stage for longer than they said they would because a delegation from their embassy was in the audience. So it wasn't our turn to go on until just a few minutes before 5:00 when the entire expo was supposed to close. Throughout our set metal grates were rolled down over the food counters, lights were being turned off in sections of the hall, and an exasperated man annouced three or four times over the PA that the Expo was closed and everyone had to leave. Yet the audience stayed in their seats, and we kept dancing because the Expo event coordinator told us to. So it was just so funny- and so fun- and felt so nice to see people stopped in their tracks watching us. When we all took the stage for out finale and bows I was cracking up.
