A shot of whisky for M's mom F, who passed away today. She had been in my life since 1987, when M became my best friend in high school, and she was there to see us through high school, college, first jobs, graduation, marriage, first and second children. She baked my wedding cake. She took me in when I had to run away from home for a while, and when I moved out on my own for the first time. She held my babies, she fed me, she was there with warmth and love. Her voice, truly her own voice, I'll never hear again. She could talk to everyone, and make them feel special and heard. She respected me for my wholeness, as a person with complete right to live and humanity, at times when I felt my own parents didn't. Her doors were always open. Her eyes, always herself. She raised two amazing daughters. She was funny and honest. I gave her a manicure for her daughter's wedding. She and her family showed me an option, when I was a teenager, of what a family could be. She was grand.
