Maybe I'll do a little blog post. So I've moved into my new apartment in New York City ("The Big Apple"). I like it so far it's a good amount of space for NYC, and the neighborhood seems pretty quiet and safe. We'll see how I feel about the commute once I start work. Orientation is Friday, then I have a week with my team, then there's a month of training. According to the placement info I got sent, I will be working as an application developer. I don't know how I feel about that, since programming is not my strong suit, and isn't waht I studied in college. The good news is that I'm going to be working under the same manager I had last summer, which is good. I got along well with her, and she must have liked me to request me to be put in her group. I'm hoping once I start that's there's some flexibility with my role. Since I am not going to document everything that I've been doing since I last updated, here's a little snapshot of what I did today:

I have a suit that I bought from the Hickey Freeman factory in Rochester, and some alterations need to be made to it (pants need to be hemmed, sleeve length needs to be adjusted, etc.) so I was going to to take it to a tailor in Manhattan to have that done. But I realised I really don't need that done right away, so I decided to put that off until I had more money, since I haven't gotten paid yet. I did have a pair of pants I bought that needed to be re-hemmed since they were too long (I can only seem to find trousers with 30 or 32 length, when I really need 31), so I took those to the Dry Cleaning/Tailor place on the corner by my apartment. I applied for a new credit card from my bank and they wanted me to fax them proof of income. Since I haven't gotten paid yet, I didn't have a pay stub to send them, so they said a copy of my offer letter was OK. After walking the ten blocks or so to the UPS Store I paid a merre $5.44 to send a four page fax, and then walked home. After eating lunch, I decided to tackle the shelf project. My apartment has tons of cabinets and cupboards in the kitchen, but doesn't have like a hall closet or anything where it could put my boxes of misc. computer parts and other stuff. One of the cupboards was really tall, probably like four or five feet , I guess the idea is that you could put a broom or something in there. I decided I'd rather put another shelf in there so I didn't have to stack everything on top of each other.

I stopped by the building supply store around the corner from my apartment, but they said they didn't have the right size shelving I needed, so they told me I'd have to go to Home Depot. I took the subway to Home Depot. I got off at the wrong subway stop, so I had to walk fifteen blocks or so, but it wasn't too bad since it wasn't hot today like it was last week. When I got to Home Depot, I couldn't find the size of particleboard I needed in the shelving section, so I asked a guy and he said they had more in the lumber section. When I found an adequately size piece in the lumber section I had to find a guy who could cut it down to the dimensions I needed. I was thirsty, so I grabbed a Coke on my way to the checkout. I grabbed a 12 oz bottle instead of the 20 oz since I decided I wasn't thirsty enough to justify the extra. Once I went to pay for the stuff, the lady told me that I needed to go back and grab the piece of the board that got cut off, since it had the UPC on it. After running and getting it and paying for everything, I decided to drink some of my soda. Unfortunately the bottle didn't have a screw-off top as I expected, but whatever you call the ones you need a bottle opener to open. I didn't have a bottle opener so I tried using the edge of the board I have to take it off. This worked somewhat, but also caused some damage to the particle board, and the cap still didn't really come off fully. The security guard saw me struggling with it, so he gave me a hand by using a window ledge as a bottle opener. This worked in taking off the cap, but also broke the glass. He went back into the store to grab me another one. A guy that had seen us struggling over it, offered me his bottle opener and I was able to open the bottle and drink the delicious beverage within. After getting the board back to my apartment and installing it, I was satisfied. This should help to amount of junk that his been lying around my living room.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to go the DMV and trade in my NH license for a NY one. I'm kind of sad about that.
