I am slightly sorry for the spam.
BUT. Back in the day when I was but a wee little sapling, as it were, the done thing on the school playground was to go 'UUUUMMMM!' very dramatically whenever anyone did something naughty. e.g 'UMMMM, you kicked me, I'm telling on you!'
Once we hit about ten and became all world weary and cynical in that way ten year olds are, we'd throw our heads back and chuckle at how utterly silly it was to make such a nonsensical noise in the face rule-breaking, and then, alas, we grew out of it entirely. I HAVE NOT HAD A GOOD UMMMM IN YEARS.
So, moving backstory aside, I'm randomly overcome with curiosity: who else UMMMM'd? Was it just a British thing? Or an English thing? Or a south west English thing? Or a My School thing?
