BRITISH PEOPLE, have a TV rec. Everyone else, GET LOST. (Or take note of the name and find yourself a place to watch it, for the only link I have is the BBC's UK-only iPlayer.)
Small Island, two one-and-a-half hour episodes.
"London 1948: Hortense joins Gilbert, her new husband, in England, where he is lodging with Queenie Bligh. The women have both married in unpromising circumstances as love is a luxury neither can afford. As Hortense remembers her life in Jamaica and the profound love she had for Michael and his betrayal of her, Queenie also remembers her night of passion with the same Michael when her husband was away at war. Initially suspicious of each other, will they uncover the secret they share?"
IT IS A BIT OF A NAFF DESCRIPTION, ik, but it is definitely one of the best things I've seen on the telly in a good long while. My parents and I just watched both episodes in one sitting, because we are hardcore badasses like that, and after reading the slightly naff programme description I thought I might get bored/distracted BUT I DID NOT.
(Although oh dear god, I just googled one of the stars, Ashley Walters, because he is a bit of a hottie and I very much enjoyed watching him swan around in dashing period costumes and wanted to see what else he's been in, and it turns out what else he has been in is SO SOLID CREW. HAHAHAHA WHAT. OH ASHLEY WALTERS YOU HAVE CLAWED YOUR WAY OUT OF DARK AND SHAMEFUL TIMES, I SEE NOW.)
