Sorry for the length. I suck at being brief.

Sam is (unsurprisingly, maybe) doing research while Dean is out to get something to eat when Cas appears into the room. Sam doesn't realize it until a hand touches his shoulder and he almost screams (in the end he just gasps); but hey, Cas was silent as usual, not even the fluttery-wings noise this time, and Sam was concentrated on his tab and he hadn't heard him at all.

"Sam?" Cas asks, and that's when Sam starts thinking that something is off. Because usually Cas doesn't look... sort of excited. Or, as excited as Castiel can get. And surely he doesn't take his hands out of the trench's pockets before putting them in again and then taking them out another time.

"Cas. Hi. Can I do something for you? What brings you by, you have any news on..."

"No, it's nothing Apocalypse related. Is Dean here?"

"Uh, nope. He's out for food. He should be back in a short while though, if..." and Sam kind of feels half-disappointed that Cas was here just to see Dean. Not that he'd admit it with a gun pointed to his head.

"Oh. Well, it does not change things much."

Sam raises an eyebrow as Cas searches for something inside his coat's pocket; he blinks when Cas takes out a... friendship bracelet. Yep. No mistake about that. The bracelet is definitely hand-made and whoever made it doesn't have much experience with knotting; it's obvious from the way the thread is sloppy in three or four places, even if it takes one look to realize that it was embroidered with a certain carefulness. And, er, the threads are three different shades of pink. And Cas is holding it like it's made of diamonds.

Sam is pretty much baffled.

"Did... did you make it?" he asks after fifteen pretty much awkward seconds.

"Yes," Cas answers, sounding kind of proud of himself. "On my quest to find God, I happened to meet an extremely nice woman who is an expert in Native American traditions."

"You're searching for God talking with Native American experts?"

"He could be anywhere. I do not wish to rule out any path. In this particular case I'm afraid to say I was unsuccessful, but I saw her wearing one of these bracelets and she explained me the tradition. And I found it illuminating, to say the least."

"Why would that be illuminating?" Sam asks, not sure that he gets it.

"Oh, it's about doing something out of your free will to show people that you care about them. And to show them that they're important to you, obviously. Is it not just amazing? So I asked her to show me how to knot one and she was happy to help me. It took me five days to finish this one and I believe it's not entirely unpleasant, for a first try."

"It isn't," Sam agrees, starting to realize where this is heading. Except that he can't even roll his eyes because he hasn't seen Castiel so excited while talking about something since... since he met him? Maybe.

"I wished to make one for you and one for Dean and come with the both of them, but then I finished the first and I must admit I could not... wait. I would have given it to Dean..." Cas keeps on, and Sam reasons that it makes sense. After all Dean was pretty much Cas' first friend, so well, he's not going to make Cas realize that saying it in front of Sam isn't exactly the most flattering thing he could do. "But since he's not here and I would made one for you anyway, I guess it doesn't change much if I give this one to you."
