These are my problems with the episode! I made the mistake of writing them first - ostensibly to get them out of the way - except it left me too grumpy to talk about all the things I did like, so. Tomorrow, it will be squee, today it is less squee.
MY FEELINGS ARE REALLY MIXED ON THIS EPISODE. I think it’s one of those times where the vast majority of my feelings are positive but the rest of my feelings are negative enough to outweigh the majority right now. Which means I will probably love it on the rewatch, wayhey!
I will get my problems out of the way first:
- THE TRICKSTER BEING GABRIEL IS KIND OF LAME. It was also kind of incredible just because of the way it was written/Richard Speight Jr played it, but as far as plot twists go it is EVEN BY SPN STANDARDS lame. I was rooting for him to turn out to be GOD or something, once things started to go ~ohh is the Trickster really a Trickster?~ So idk. I really liked the way RSjr played it, and I really like that the Apocalypse is essentially a family falling out now (totally playing into my predictions/hopes that in the end Lucifer’s ‘defeat’ will be Michael’s forgiveness), but I’m sad that he’s no longer the neutral cosmic wild card of yesteryear.
- I am really, really disappointed that we got an episode WITH THE TRICKSTER and WITH MYSTERY SPOT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT and WITH SAM MAKING TRICKSTER-RELATED FACIAL TICKS WHICH FILLED ME WITH SO MUCH EXCITEMENT, and yet Dean was the one who got to feel all the anger and vengeful thoughts about it. Which, okay, Sam’s anger and vengeful thoughts were indeed his downfall last season so it's probably a good thing he's moved away from that, but I still feel really let down by that, and by the way that the six months Dean was dead weren’t mentioned at all. Because we’re probably never going to get another reference to Mystery Spot again! That thread seems officially tied. Once again, the writers have somehow completely forgotten about how much TRAUMA they’ve put Sam through in favour of just making him The Bad One. Yawn. Wake me up when it’s over.
- MY ATTEMPTS AT LIKING/JUST NOT HATING CASTIEL ARE REALLY NOT WORKING, OH GOOD LORD. Just go away, Castiel. Get out of my life. I don’t want to hate you! I would actually quite like to be able to enjoy all of this show, instead of just the bits without your face in it! But it isn’t working and honestly I think trying to lessen my hatred by imagining you in lulzy, awkward courtship, pet lizarding situations has just made said hatred for you ALL THE STRONGER when you’re not being a dunderhead. I WISH GABRIECKSTER HAD LEFT YOU WHEREVER HE SENT YOU.
... okay perhaps I have should have gone for the positives first, ‘cause now I’m too annoyed to write them. TWO PART REVIEW, okay. Tune in tomorrow for the sparkle shiny happy fingers-in-ears-la-la-la review.
