Absence-of-light, more than darkness, beyond sound and color, more than one body can hold; that's what ties Sam down, and he willingly shoulders the weight of the world. They're tearing Sam apart, but still he kneels. He feels the demons crumble two by two, smoke and ash and yellow soot, thick as thunder. Down and down they go, clawing kitten-weak and angry and broken, the battle lost and the war rolling ever closer.
That'll be then; this is now, and Sam holds his ground amidst the killing fields.
He knows when Dean is safe; it's a low rumble that rolls through Sam's -- can he still call it a soul? He hears Dean yelling for him; too late, maybe always been too late to call back but Dean's safe and that's all Sam cares about.
There's a crack in his bones, all his bones, when the final seal breaks, but it saved Dean's life.
