Sam is SUCH a horrible liar. Except when he was lying to the kid, which SERIOUSLY unnerved me and made me cry. I have no idea why I'm far more okay with him lying to Dean than I am with him lying to a little kid. It HURT. Oh, Sam. (Though, like you, I wasn't sure if he was lying or if he had some sooper sekrit thing unbeknownst to Dean that would stop Tessa. That's what I was HOPING, but I have the feeling he was just being amazingly manipulative.)

My theory is that Sam really HATES lying to Dean, which is why he's so bad at it. I mean, he obviously hated lying to the kid too (if he was indeed lying, ARGH), but it was kinda necessary and for the greater good and whatnot. Whereas when he lies to Dean it's pretty much selfishly (albeit understandably) protecting himself from Dean's JUDGY JUDGING, and that pains him inside. That is my theory.
