Family History: Madame Vyer, mother. Somewhat cold and distant; spent little time with her son before he had his breakdown and less time with him afterwards. Is generally disappointed with him, and not happy about his current condition or his behavior after his breakdown.

Mr. Vyer, father. Almost a non-presence in his life. Barely home, spends most of his time at work. Leaves Max to his wife/Dexter. Is in general as disappointed in him as his wife.

Dexter Favin, bodyguard. Has known Max since he was sixteen and has been responsible for keeping him out of trouble with varying amounts of success. Is the only one who currently visits Max and attempts to keep in contact with him. Is generally irritated by his delusions and refuses to indulge them, but wants Max to get better. He and Max are very close.

Katherine Easley, ex-fiance. Max's mother hoped that getting Max married to Katherine would settle him down. Max ran off before they could actually get married, and the engagement has since been called off.

Life History: Max is a shiftless, sheltered layabout who's been spoiled for most of his life. He has a long track-record of extremely bad decisions, and more often than not delights in teasing and causing trouble for the people who care for him (primarily Dexter, who's used to it). He's lazy, immature, naive, childish, and easily bored, and reacts badly to people telling him what to do. He's used to having Dexter around to compensate for his bad decisions or to take care of him in general - he does badly on his own. He's also extremely bad at handling stress of any kind, and when frightened or hurt he expects Dexter to come to his rescue. He is, however, rather friendly and outgoing, and fairly bright.

Max's mother had hoped that an arranged marriage to Katherine would calm Max down, but it had the opposite effect. Max ran away, got extremely drunk, and eventually had to be tracked down by Dexter. Part of why Max ran away was because he's confused about his sexuality; he suspects that he might be gay or bisexual. While he was off by himself, he ran into Caleb Stern (the Captain), and the two of them had a brief rendezvouz where Max ended up nearly killing him by accident. The stress from this near-murder, his pending engagement, his confusion over his sexuality, his lack of power in his real life, his increasingly vivid fantasy life, and his general substance abuse ended up eventually causing Max's breakdown.

Max's delusions tie very directly into ZEX's life, as ZEX's life is the one that Max wants to live. Max wanted adventure, to make an impact on the world - ZEX was a hotshot pilot during the War and a galactically recognized hero and genius. Dexter takes care of Max - ZEX takes care of DAX (somewhat, it's more that their relationship is more equal than in reality). Max is confused and frightened by his sexuality - ZEX is a xenophile and deeply proud of it, and is even a martyr because of it. Max wants to be important - ZEX was one of the most important figures in VUX history. Max likes playing the martyr for sympathy - ZEX is martyred by his people and exiled to his own world to pursue his own interests. Max likes animals - ZEX has his own entire zoo. ZEX's life is a long experiment in wish fulfillment for Max.

A key part of these delusions is the Captain. Max, accidentally, sent Caleb to the hospital. Given that he had a huge crush on Caleb at the time and that this was the first time that anything he'd done had had such terrible consequences, this completely devastated him. So Max changed things, in his mind. Caleb became the Captain, the fulfillment of twenty years of waiting for ZEX. His inescapable guilt over Caleb's near-death manifested in the death of his own fantasy life; ZEX's lust for the Captain and attempt to kidnap him ended up getting him killed. ZEX's violent death at the hands of his Beauty was a subconscious manifestation of Max's guilt and sorrow for what he'd done, punishing himself by taking away what made him happy. Losing ZEX, in a way, contributed heavily to Max's nervous breakdown. Something in him snapped one night after too much alcohol and too many pills, and he lost the barrier between him and ZEX. He supposedly lost all memory of his real life, instead becoming his hero because he couldn't take being himself anymore. Madame Vyer was quick to put him somewhere quiet so she could hush up the entire affair, and Landel's seemed the perfect choice.

Medical History: Max has some drug problems, mostly with hallucinogens and Ecstasy type uppers. He also has a history of alcoholism. He had a very rich fantasy life since he was young, and whenever he's stressed, he tends to retreat into his own fantasies, usually aided with some kind of psychotropic drug or another. His breakdown came about due to a period of extremely high stress; he was unable to deal with his real life, so lost himself completely in his fantasy one.
Other than that, he's in fairly good health.

Current Status: Max hasn't regained any of his memories, although he's started responding to his real name. He's also slowly "relearning" basic skills like eating, cleaning himself, and writing. While still firmly insistent on his delusions, Max seems cooperative and intelligent. Very optimistic for his future recovery.
