Waiting... for a change in the weather

Jan 09, 2004 10:40

Traffic swam through the streets of Reston with the exaggerated slowness of a faked moon landing. It seems that sub-freezing temperatures and a 'dusting' of snow is all it takes to transform Northern Virginia into armageddon. After less than one inch of accumulation, Route 66 was closed down entirely. On the Dulles Toll Road, cars were bouncing off each other 'like bumper cars' before coming to an abrupt stop in a roadside ditch. The indomitable DC Metro's orange line suffered delays when an SUV flipped onto the train tracks.

I took the opportunity to sleep in a bit, jump rope, and push my commute off until ten. Even then, the eastward direction of 267 was at a dead standstill, backed up as far as the eye could see.
