Friends Only

As I state in my profile, all my posts except "writers' block" quiz results are friends-only. That is just because life is complicated, and -- as you have probably experienced -- anything you say can and most likely will be used against you eventually. If you ask nicely, I'll be glad to come check you out and most likely add you. I talk about my ( Read more... )

Hi! Jeffthelion mentioned that you were looking for writing/publishing advice so I said I'd be happy to help as I'm going through the process of trying to find a publisher/agent at the moment.

Thank you! Added you back.

I am not quite to that stage yet... still deep in self-editing and trying to get to the point where I try to find out if I actually have something here beyond a pastime.

Well that's ok, just let me know if you want any help/advice/proofreading, I'm always keen to support other writers.

Thank you! I am writing in Scrivener which doesn't have any convenient means of sharing in real time, but I'm working on a password-protected Wordpress site where I'm posting parts that are more "done".

In the meantime, if you are curious, I have posted two sections as entries on here. Use the tag "postcards from myself" (which is the book title).

I hadn't heard of Scrivener until now, and I wish I'd known about it a few years back. It sounds like a potentially very useful tool for writing and editing!

I read your excerpts, and from what I can tell you don't have any issues in your writing. It's all there - correct formatting, interesting location, diverse characters, sense of character, balance between dialogue/action/thought/description, range of vocabulary, realistic dialogue etc. And kudos to you for researching historical elements, I can't abide it when I read stuff that has errors that the author could have avoided with a quick Google search!

Obviously I can't tell from those excerpts whether you have underlying issues to do with consistency and structure, but you've mentioned on LJ that you're working through those, so you're on the right path in that respect. Being able to look at a piece of writing objectively and recognise its flaws is one of the hardest things about writing, I find.

Keep up the good work, and I look forward to reading more!
