Character name: Dean Winchester
Fandom: Supernatural
Timeline: After season 6, episode 21.
Age: 32
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Though he doesn't have any “special” abilities, Dean has been trained to deal with paranormal situations since he was a child, and he has the knowledge and skills to deal with ghosts, spirits, vampires, werewolves, demons, angels... He also has a high proficiency level with firearms, and uses guns as his preferred method of combat. However, Dean is also very capable of taking care of himself in a hand-to-hand scuffle. During his time in hell, he became very experienced in the school of torture, but that is one road he never wants to walk down again.
He is, generally, a rough-and-tumble kind of guy, but Dean also has some smarts about him. Not only is he skilled at tracking and reading people's behaviors, he's also a fairly skilled conman with enough knowledge of government agencies to allow him to impersonate agents to conduct his investigations. Since he doesn't have a job that brings in money, he easily gets by using phony credit cards. Dean is known to carry a few hidden blades and lockpicks on him, which he is more than capable of using. Also, he's a pretty good mechanic, capable of carjacking, if needed, but more importantly, he maintains good care of his baby - a '67 Chevy Impala.
After being abducted by fairies, Dean is also able to see all sorts of fae in the human realm.
How would they use their abilities?: If there's any sort of haunting, demon possession or whatnot on the Thor, Dean's your man. He has a knack for breaking rules and operating outside the law, but it's always for what he believes to be good reasons. In general, Dean holds the safety of innocent lives as a top priority.
Appearance: He stands at 6'1”, but often wears work boots that might elevate his height slightly. Weighing about 185 pounds, he has a medium build, not too muscular, but still pretty athletic. His hair is short, light brown, green eyes, and full, pouty lips. Dean prefers to wear jeans with a plain T-shirt, sometimes with a loose button-down, and also with a leather jacket. Underneath all that, he has a tattoo of a black pentagram on the left side of his chest, which serves as protection against demonic possession, and he also has a handprint-shaped scar on his upper-left arm from when Castiel pulled him from Hell. Dean usually wears a gun holster around his waist and a knife holster around his leg. Plus, he does also accessorize a little, and always wears wristwatch, black bracelet, and a silver ring.
Background: Only a few months before Dean's fifth birthday, his mother died in what was seemingly a house fire. In reality, a yellow-eyed demon named Azazel killed her as he fed Dean's baby brother Sam a few drops of blood. Dean and Sam both survived, along with their father, who swore revenge on the demon who took his wife's life. Since that night, the three lived together on the road, traveling from motel to motel as the father searched for Azazel while hunting other creatures along the way. Because their father was often absent, off on dangerous missions, the responsibility of caring for Sam fell to Dean, who still sees it as his job to do everything he can to protect his little brother.
Being raised in such a dangerous lifestyle, Dean learned to defend himself at a very early age. Already, when he was around 6 or 7, his father took him target shooting. Whenever he was left alone at the motel with Sam, their father always left a firearm in the room, should Dean need to protect himself and his brother, and in 6th grade, Dean had already made his first sawed-off shotgun. Aside from his father giving him his own lessons in “hunting,” Dean did also receive a formal education, though he and Sam never stayed at one school more than a week or two. This lifestyle made it difficult enough for Dean to earn a GED, so once he finished high school, he didn't even bother with anything else.
However, when he was around 23, Sam decided he was through with this lifestyle and left Dean and their father to go to college and try for a normal life. Dean continued hunting with his father like a good, obedient son, and during this time, he met a girl named Cassie Robinson. It was the first time he had seriously dated someone, though the relationship only lasted a couple weeks. Dean felt so close to Cassie, that he actually told her the big family secret - that they were demon hunters. Thinking he was absolutely insane, Cassie dumped him, and the incident affected Dean in such a way that he decided it was “stupid to get so close” to people and decided not to open up to anyone that way ever again.
Eventually, when he was around 24 or 25 years old, Dean's father finally allowed him to start hunting on his own. Unfortunately, when he was 26, his father went missing, so he was forced to return to his brother Sam, who he had not spoken to in years. Following a journal left by their father, the two left in Dean's Impala and continued hunting spirits together in search of their father. Along the way, Dean was accidentally electrocuted during a hunting job, leaving him with a fatal heart condition. His brother took him to a faith healer, despite Dean's skepticism, but it did, in the end, save Dean's life. Upon meeting Dean, the healer noted that he was “a young man with an important purpose.” Eventually, the two young men found their father, who was in search of a gun crafted in 1835 by a man named Samuel Colt. This gun was said to have the power to kill anything - even the demon that had killed Dean's mother. As the three moved closer and closer in their search, Azazel possessed the father's body and attacked the two brothers. At one point, Dean's father managed to temporarily overcome the demon long enough to plead with Sam to shoot him, which would also kill the demon inside. This was one order from his father that Dean could not obey, so he pleaded with Sam not to do it. Fortunately, the demon left their father's body after Sam shot him in the leg.
From there, the trio began driving to a hospital, but along the way, Azazel had possessed a truck driver, who ran his semi-truck into the Impala, wrecking the car and leaving the three passengers with serious injuries. After being taken to a hospital, Sam and his father made easy recoveries. Dean, however, remained in a coma. As his spirit wandered the hospital, he encountered a reaper, who explained that he was meant to die, and that he needed to leave with her or remain on the mortal plane and become a vengeful spirit. Meanwhile, Dean's father had made a deal with Azazel - the very demon they had been hunting all along - to give his soul in exchange for Dean's life. Azazel overpowered the reaper, and Dean awoke from his coma. His father remained alive long enough to give Dean one last order: Save Sam, or kill him.
The death of his father left a huge impact on Dean, who had always been a loyal son. He spent some time fixing up his Impala, which helped vent some of his grief, but he continued struggling to keep the truth a secret from Sam, who did not realize the deal their father had made, nor the order he had given to Dean. Because of the demon blood fed to him as a baby, Sam had started developing special psychic powers, which were becoming a bit of a concern to Dean. The last thing he wanted to do was kill his brother, so he was ready to do absolutely anything it took to save him.
At one point, however, the law managed to catch up with Dean, and he was arrested on suspicion of murder. Of course, Dean never killed anyone but evil spirits. In reality, the killer was a shapeshifter who was witnessed committing the crime in Dean's form. Fortunately, the police let Dean go free after he and Sam saved them from a vengeful spirit. FBI agent Victor Henrikson, however, continued his search for the Winchester brothers.
As they continued their hunt for Azazel, Dean was attacked by a Djinn. In lore, these creatures are said to grant your deepest wish. What the Djinn actually did was put humans in a coma-like state, feeding them realistic hallucinations, so they think they are living their greatest desire. After Dean was captured by this creature, it was revealed that one of his greatest desires was that his mother never died, and everyone lived a normal life. It was peaceful, but Dean and Sam were very distant from one another in this reality. Although this hallucination came from a strong desire in Dean's subconscious, he struggled to return to reality once he realized this was all just a lie, preferring his life as a hunter. He did admit later, though, that he liked that life, and didn't really want to leave.
Eventually, Azazel kidnapped Sam and other children who had been fed demon blood as a child. It was his plan to start up a survival death-match between them, and the victor would be his champion, leading a demon army on Earth. Once Sam went missing, Dean immediately began searching for his brother. He managed to find Sam, thanks to one of Azazel's other psychic children who sent Dean an image, letting him know their position. Dean hurried to Cold Oak, South Dakota - a town so haunted, that it was abandoned. He was, unfortunately, just a moment too late. Dean arrived just in time to witness Sam fighting one of the other psychics, Jake, who killed Sam by stabbing him through the stomach, then fled the scene. Dean hurried to his brother, but the stab wound was fatal, and Sam died in his arms. Unable to accept this, Dean summoned a Crossroads Demon, which is a demon who will formally strike up a contract with a human, giving them any wish or desire in exchange for the human's life and soul at a fixed point in the future. In exchange for bringing Sam back to life, the demon gave him one more year to live, under the condition that Dean would not fight this deal.
Reunited with his brother, Dean and Sam worked with Bobby, a close family friend, to kill Azazel once and for all. As it turned out, Samuel Colt created not only the legendary gun, but a set of railroad tracks in the state of Wyoming that created one large Devil's Trap, which would allow no demon to enter or escape that area, suggesting that Colt had trapped something nasty there that he really did not want to let out. Being human, Jake, Azazel's champion, was able to enter and break the Devil's Trap, and unlock the crypt that sat at its center. The team hurried to put a stop to this, but they failed. As it turns out, this crypt was actually a gate to Hell, which, once opened, unleashed thousands of demons into the world. Amidst the chaos, Dean managed to shoot Azazel with the Colt's final bullet, killing him once and for all, but this gate to Hell had just created thousands of new problems for the Winchesters.
After learning about the deal Dean made with the demon, Sam spent much time researching how to break his brother from this contract. Dean, however, didn't bother to try fighting it, but instead chose to live up what life he had left, though he did help his brother in fighting demons that had escaped Hell. He also began training Sam to fight on his own, so that he could continue hunting once Dean died. The two eventually met up with a “friendly” demon named Ruby, who fixed the Colt gun, refilling it with ammo and returning its power to kill anything. With the reacquisition of this powerful weapon, the brothers planned to use it in a fight once the hellhounds came to claim Dean's soul.
Eventually, the gun was stolen by Bela, a thief who stole supernatural items for rich clients. She's also the one who tipped off the police to Dean and Sam's location, and the two brothers were once again arrested, this time bringing them face to face with Agent Hendrikson. While imprisoned, a horde of demons launched an attack on the jail. Ruby also appeared to offer help, saying she knew a spell that would destroy all the demons, including herself, and it involved sacrificing a young virgin who was also trapped in the police station. Both Sam and the virgin agreed to this plan, but Dean would have none of it. Instead, he created a plan to exorcise the entire horde of demons while saving everyone inside. Once the fight was over, Hendrikson realized the truth behind these brothers, and let them go free.
The jail was not safe, however. After the Winchesters left, it was blown up and destroyed by a demon named Lilith. Because Sam was one of Azazel's chosen to lead an army of Hell, Lilith viewed him as her main rival, and sought to kill him. She also turned out to be the demon who held Dean's contract. After learning this bit of information, the Winchesters naturally sought to kill her. They tracked her to New Harmony, Indiana, but unfortunately, they were too late. Unable to fight off the hellhounds, Dean's body was ripped to shreds and his soul sent to Hell.
During his time in Hell, Dean was tortured by a demon named Alistair. Each day, he was cut and torn to pieces, only to be put together whole to endure the whole process over and over. After every session, Alistair proposed to take him off the rack if Dean agreed to torture others. Time in Hell flowed differently, so Dean spent thirty years enduring torture and turning down Alistair's offer. Finally, he could take no more and decided to torture other souls to spare himself. This lasted for ten Hell years.
On Earth, four months had passed when Dean suddenly found himself awake in a coffin. Confused, he dug himself out and found an empty gas station, where he was able to get some food and water. He realized there wasn't a single scar or scratch on him, save for two mysterious, red hand prints on his upper arms. While he was in the gas station, a few electronics flickered on and he began to hear a sudden high, piercing pitch that shattered glass that was painful to his ears. The noise stopped as suddenly as it began. Confused, Dean decided to just continue with his business to get in contact with Sam and Bobby. Unable to reach Sam, Dean called Bobby, who thought it was someone playing a cruel joke, calling and pretending to be Dean. Once he arrived at Bobby's home, Dean had to prove that he was himself and not some ghost, demon, shapeshifter, etc. Figuring that Sam might have made some sort of deal with a demon, just as Dean and their father had done, the two looked for the younger Winchester, and found him just as surprised to find Dean alive.
Dean, Sam, and Bobby then went to visit a medium and held a seance to try and learn the identity of whatever it was that brought Dean back from Hell. The woman learned his name was Castiel, but he refused to show himself to her. After continuing to insist, Castiel obliged, and the medium's eyeballs ruptured. Fearing the creature that could have done this, Dean and Bobby went in search for Castiel, equipping themselves with every weapon, charm, and glyph they could think of, but when Castiel finally appeared, nothing worked. He revealed himself as an angel of the Lord, saying that he was ordered to raise Dean from Hell because God had a plan for him. Lilith was still at work, trying to break the seals that held Lucifer's prison shut, and it was up to Dean to try and stop this from happening.
Later, Dean was sent back in time to the year 1973, where he met his father, mother, and grandparents. Seeing a chance to fix things, Dean attempted to fight Azazel in the past in order to change the future. However, he failed, only to make the demon aware of his family, which set off events in the future. Even if Dean hadn't done anything, though, Castiel explained that this was all destined to happen, regardless. After returning to his own time, Castiel also informed Dean that Sam was “going down a very dark road.” Dean received instructions from the angel that led him to walk in on Sam using his demonic powers to violently exorcise a demon. After a confrontation, Sam agreed to never use the powers again, and not much later, Dean also admitted to his brother what he had done in Hell. He also confessed that he actually liked torturing other people, since he finally had the chance to give out the same pain he had endured for thirty years.
Alistair, Dean's old torture instructor appeared on Earth, and it wasn't long before the angels captured him to find out who was killing angels and how they were doing it. Alistair refused to give any information, so the angels called on Dean. Of course, he refused at first, but eventually agreed to torture once again in order to get the needed information. As he faced Alistair on the rack, Dean told him that through all his time in Hell, he had been dreaming of this very moment. During his torture session, Dean learned that he was actually the one to break the first seal - “when a righteous man sheds blood in Hell.” Eventually, Alistair managed to escape his confines before giving Dean any other information, nearly killing him and sending Castiel back to Heaven, but Sam arrived just in time to use his powers on Alistair. The demon confessed that the demons were not killing angels, and he did not know who was. Then, Sam proceeded to kill him.
The injuries Dean sustained during this encounter were enough to send him to a hospital. As he was recovering, Castiel informed Dean that he had learned Uriel, his superior, was the one killing angels so that their brother Lucifer could be freed. Castiel also told Dean that because he was the one to break the first seal, he was the only one able to prevent the Apocalypse. Overwhelmed with this information, Dean asked Castiel to find someone else to do this, since he didn't believe he was up to the task. However, Castiel's new boss Zachariah sent Dean and Sam to an alternate reality where they were not related and lived normal lives with normal careers. Despite the fact that they couldn't remember their lives as hunters, the two teamed up anyway to purge a ghost that was haunting their place of work. At the end of it all, Zachariah revealed to Dean that this was a lesson to teach him that hunting was in his blood, and that he was the one who must take on the task of preventing the Apocalypse. Finding a new resolve, Dean agreed to continue this mission.
He realized, however, that Sam was getting worse with his demonic powers. Dean learned that his brother was growing stronger and stronger by drinking demon blood given to him by their old demon pal Ruby, who Dean never trusted. It was easy to see that Sam was growing dependent on the blood, so in an attempt to remove the addiction, Dean and Bobby trapped him in a secure, demon-proof room for what Dean believes to be Sam's own safety. However, Castiel released Sam from the safe room and he escaped to get more blood from Ruby and continue tracking Lilith. Dean caught up with his brother, and the two had a heated argument over the issue, resulting in Sam walking out on Dean.
At this point, the angels revealed to Dean that they were going to allow the Apocalypse to begin, and were preparing for Sam to break the final seal by killing Lilith. Dean convinced Castiel to turn against the other angels and help him stop Sam, so as Castiel held off the archangels, Dean was transported to Sam and Ruby's location. However, Ruby locked Dean out of the room where Sam was having his final showdown, and Dean was unable to prevent the final seal from breaking. Once the deed was done, he hurried into the room and killed Ruby as a portal began to open. As they tried to escape, Sam and Dean found that they were trapped in the room.
Suddenly, the Winchester brothers were transported onto an airplane by some mysterious force. The plane passed over the site where the portal was opening, causing it to crash, but Dean and Sam made it away safely. Soon after, Dean was approached by Zachariah again, who informed him that it was fate for Michael to face Lucifer, and that Dean was Michael's true vessel. However, angels cannot possess humans at will, like demons can. Humans need to give their consent in order for an angel to use their bodies as vessels, but Dean refused his consent. Zachariah attempted to force Dean by torturing Sam, but Castiel appeared and saved them both. In an attempt to find God, Castiel asked to borrow Dean's amulet necklace, explaining that would glow in God's presence. The necklace was special to Dean - a gift given to him one Christmas from Sam - but he agreed to lend it to Castiel, nevertheless. Later on, after learning that it was futile to continue searching for a God that had no interest in the passing events, Dean decided the amulet was useless and chucked it in the trash.
Dean and Sam came across a town that seemed to be overrun by demons, but actually, the townsfolk were divided in half, each side thinking the other was possessed by demons, causing them to kill each other off. The brothers soon learned that this was the work of the first Horseman of the Apocalypse - War. They learned his power lied in his ring, so they defeated him by cutting off his finger and taking the ring for themselves. Also, Dean still did not trust Sam's lust for demon blood and decided it would be for the best if they parted ways.
After this incident, in an attempt to convince Dean to give his consent to Michael, Zachariah sent Dean to a future reality to show him what would happen if he never says “yes.” In this future, the world was overrun by a croatoan virus, making the population like zombies, and Dean was the leader of a human resistance faction He learned that Castiel had lost his grace and became some kind of stoner-hippie, and that Sam, Lucifer's true human vessel, had given his consent and was laying ruin to the Earth. Meanwhile, Dean's future self had become a cold-hearted hardass, and he wasn't afraid to shoot a comrade he suspected was infected with the croatoan virus, nor did he hesitate to use old friends, such as Castiel, as canon fodder in a fight against Lucifer. However, his future self confessed that his biggest regret is never giving is consent to Michael, and it was now too late to do so. He pleaded with Dean from the past to say yes to Michael. Though, when Dean returned to his own time, he still refused consent, despite witnessing that horrible future.
Dean reunited with his brother and the two decided it was best if they stayed together to help “keep each other human.” The two re-obtained the Colt, and decided to launch an attack on Lucifer. Two of their hunter friends died during the fight, and in the end, they realized that Lucifer was immune to the power of the Colt. Apparently, he was one of five things in all of creation that the Colt was unable to kill. Desperate, and still not fully trusting Sam, Dean began to feel that saying “yes” to Michael really was the only way to defeat Lucifer, but thanks to Sam's encouragement and support, Dean continued refusing his consent.
Eventually, they learned that there was a way to put Lucifer back in his prison, and they would need all four Horsemen's rings. They then sought out the other three horsemen - Famine, Pestilence, and Death. When facing Famine, everyone within his radius was busy gorging themselves on their greatest addiction. Even Castiel was susceptible to his vessel's craving for red meat, but Dean seemed unaffected by Famine's power. He revealed that this was because he felt dead on the inside and even begged Heaven for help in desperation. In the fight against Pestilence, the two brothers became disease-ridden and could not get close enough to defeat him. Fortunately, Castiel stepped in just in time to save them and claim the ring. The final ring, Death, was obtained by Dean in a Chicago pizza parlor. While sitting down to have a bite of deep dish with Death, the Horsemen actually told Dean that he wanted Lucifer defeated because he did not like being kept on the Devil's leash.
In a last attempt to gain Dean's consent, Zachariah took him to a room from which it was impossible to escape. He finally gave his consent on one condition - that when Michael takes his body, Michael would kill Zachariah. Just as Michael was beginning to arrive, Dean killed Zachariah with an angel blade - the only weapon that can kill an angel - and reneged on the deal. This forced Michael to take a new vessel - Adam, Dean and Sam's secret half-brother. Because Adam shared Winchester blood, he was able to serve as a secondary vessel.
Now that they had all four rings, Dean created a plan with Sam - Sam would give Lucifer his consent, then fight to keep control so that he could jump into the prison with Lucifer trapped in his body. Dean was reluctant to go along with this plan, but eventually realized his brother was stronger than he gave him credit for. Sam consented, but failed to mentally overpower Lucifer. The two angels met at Stull Cemetary to have their final showdown, only to be crashed by Dean (blasting Def Leppard's “Rock of Ages” from the Impala, by the way). Annoyed by this, Lucifer started to beat on Dean, but he didn't stop trying to call out to his brother. Eventually, Sam regained consciousness long enough for Dean to open the portal and jump in, dragging Michael down with him, and the Apocalypse was successfully averted.
From there, Dean decided to fulfill his final promise to Sam - to settle down and live a normal life. He moved in with Lisa, an old girlfriend of his, and her son Ben in Battle Creek, Michigan. Things had been going well for a year. Dean was working in construction and began driving a pick-up truck, leaving the Impala and all his weapons under a tarp in the garage. That all lasted until a Djinn tracked him down and poisoned him, giving him hallucinations. At the last minute, Dean was saved by none other than his little brother Sammy, who he had believed to be stuck in Lucifer's cage for the past year. After running some tests, Sam proved that he was, in fact, human, and unaware of how he was able to return. In fact, he had been resurrected almost right after the Lucifer incident, but never got in contact with Dean because he wanted his brother to have a chance at living a normal life.
With the two brothers reunited, Dean tried to juggle his home life and hunting life. Lisa agreed that he could go out, do his job, and stop by to visit her and Ben whenever he found the time. Dean left with Sam, who introduced him to a group of hunters, all cousins from their mother's side. These hunters were led by Samuel Campell - Dean and Sam's grandfather, who had also been mysteriously resurrected. As they continued working together, Dean couldn't help but feel a strange vibe about his brother. Something was wrong, but he didn't know exactly what.
During one of their investigations, they realized they needed Castiel's help, but Sam told his brother that he tried several times to call on the angel, but he never showed up. However, he appeared almost instantly after Dean prayed to him. He then instructed Castiel that he should answer to Sam's call just as readily from now on. Castiel also informed the brothers that with Michael gone, there was now a civil war going on in Heaven over who should be in charge, so he cannot always be at Dean's beck and call.
The two brothers continued hunting, and as they went after a nest of vampires. Dean was assaulted in an alley and fed vampire blood while Sam stood by and watched, allowing his brother to be converted. Hating what he had become, Dean pleaded with Sam to kill him, but his brother preferred to wait for their grandfather to arrive. As they were waiting for Samuel, Dean escaped and made his way to Battle Creek to say his goodbyes to Lisa. However, he found that the bloodlust was to strong, and he scared Lisa and Ben before making his escape. By the time he returned to Sam, Samuel had arrived and explained that there was a cure for vampirism, so long as Dean didn't take his first drink of blood. All Dean had to do was take the blood of the vampire who turned him, so he made an attempt to infiltrate the nest. He was successful in killing all the vampires and retrieving the blood, but as he took the cure, memories flooded back to him, and he realized that Sam just stood there, allowing him to be turned. This made him grow even more wary of his brother.
Soon after, Vertias, the goddess of truth took control of a town, cursing everyone in it to hear only the truth. During this time, Dean spoke with Lisa over the phone, who basically told him that their relationship was over, that he could no longer be a part of her and Ben's lives. He truly cared about them, so it was a bit crushing for Dean to hear this. Though, he did take the opportunity to confront Sam about why he did nothing to save him from the vampire, to which Sam replied that he just froze. Since they were cursed to only hear the truth, Dean accepted this answer. However, the two were captured by Veritas, who was shocked to discover that Sam was actually lying to her, and she had no idea how he was able to do this.
After defeating the goddess, Sam admitted that he allowed Dean to be turned into a vampire, and that he has hardly felt any emotion since returning. Unnerved by whatever Sam had become, Dean turned on his brother, punching him over and over, even after Sam had passed out. He bound his brother and summoned Castiel. After a brief but painful examination, the angel reported that Sam had no soul. To make matters worse, Dean also learned that his grandfather was taking orders from a demon named Crowley, who was trying to find Purgatory by capturing the very first of each type of creature and torturing them for information. Crowley also convinced the brothers to work for him in order to get Sam's soul back.
It came to the point where the brothers were fed up with dealing with Crowley, so they hunted and confronted him. He admitted that he could not give Sam back his soul, so Castiel burned his bones and killed Crowley. Sam admitted he didn't want his soul back, but Dean wouldn't give in. He met once again with Death and made a deal for Sam's soul. If Dean spent one day wearing Death's ring to do the job of a reaper, Sam could have his soul back. It was too heavy of a task for him, and Dean failed. Still, seeing that Dean had learned a valuable lesson, that there is a natural order to things, Death still upheld his end of the deal and returned Sam's soul while also creating barriers in his mind so that he wasn't tormented with memories of Hell.
The brothers continued hunting, and they learned of the resurrection of Eve, Mother of All, from Purgatory. She was the one who created every monster and supernatural creature that roamed the Earth, and she was back to create more. Dean and Sam discovered that she was susceptible to phoenix ash, so after taking a brief trip to the past, they obtained the ash and set out to face Eve. In a confrontation, she explained that she was doing this because she was very upset with Crowley for searching for Purgatory. Dean had believed Crowley to be dead after Castiel burned his bones, but Eve insisted that he was still very much alive and continuing his torture on her children. After learning this, Dean used the phoenix ash to successfully kill Eve.
However, now Sam and Bobby were incredibly suspicious of Castiel for failing to kill Crowley, and discussed the idea of Castiel being “superman gone darkside.” But Dean couldn't accept that possibility. He said that after all the angel had done for them, the least they could do was give Castiel the benefit of the doubt. As the three continued tracking Crowley, they learned of a group of demons who could lead them to him. When they arrived at the demons' location, they arrived at a suspiciously clean and empty home. While they were there, they were suddenly attacked by more demons. Castiel, who had been watching in secret all along, killed the Winchesters' attackers.
For a brief moment, all their doubts about the angel were erased, until Castiel made a reference that it would be ridiculous for superman to go darkside. Realizing that Castiel was spying on them the whole time, even Dean grew suspicious. He later summoned the angel, trapped him in a ring of fire, and asked him directly if he was working for Crowley. Unable to lie , Castiel confessed that yes, he was, and that he was also the one who raised Sam from Lucifer's cage. He claimed everything he had done was for the Winchesters, but Dean was still upset and told him that it's never okay to work with a demon. However, their conversation was cut short, and the Winchesters had to escape from a cloud of approaching demons. Shortly after, Castiel appeared once again to Dean, who tried once again to get him to stop working with Crowley. He told Castiel that he was one of the three people most dear to him, alongside Sam and Bobby, but if it came down to it, Dean wasn't afraid to stop him. Sadly, Castiel did not give in to Dean's requests and continued with his own plan.
Although Dean was no longer with Lisa, she was still a weak point for him, and Crowley knew it. He sent demons to capture Lisa and Ben as hostages, telling Dean to lay off, or else he'd kill them. Dean couldn't accept that, so he did everything he could to try and find them. Castiel appeared to him again, apologizing for what happened, that he did not know Crowley would do this. Once again, he asked Dean to trust him, saying that he had done everything Dean has ever asked while demanding little in return, and he deserved his trust now, but Dean remained unwilling to go along with the angel's plan. He successfully rescued Lisa and Ben, and while they were in the hospital, Castiel appeared to heal them. Dean asked him for another favor, to erase him from their memories. The angel obliged, though this changed nothing between the two. Dean still would not forgive him for working with Crowley.
Just as Dean was about to continue his search for Crowley with Sam and Bobby, he suddenly found himself on some sort of space station filled with weird aliens....
