First off...Happy 1 year Ann. Kristin & Michael! I hope you two are able to be together today! I love you guys!
Now: THE TONYS: I thought the opening iwht all of the best musical nods was awesome and very exciting. But when they put on that tedious Billy Crystal thing and Hugh Jackman's equallyt tedious dance, I was bored and dissapointed. I also felt that the best featured actors in a play nods were cheated out of receiving something special before being announced becxause Crystal suddenly out of the blue.
The rest of the show was fabulous though.
The two shows I rooted for were Doubt and The Light in the Piazza. I haven't seen either yet, but there is something about these shows that captivate me. Light in the Piazza's presentation made me EMOTIONAL! That one song made me emotional and I literally had tears in my eyes!
And then, at the end of the night, after being happy that Doubt won, and that Victoria Clark DESERVEDLY won best actress and the show garnered 5 other awards I felt...wow, maybe, for the first time, since 9/11, we will have a show that GIVES US A MEANINGFUL MESSAGE and TOUCHES OUR HEARTS will win best musical...no, SPAMALOT, a silly, goofy musical had to ONCE AGAIN win...I'm really not getting it!, here is why:
Let me see, the last time we had a aptivating, emotional, and revolutionary show win Best Musical was CONTACT in 2000.
Then the Producers won, fine, there is room for comedy.
The year after that THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE garnered best musical, which I din't have too many problems with, it was the season of 9/11 and we all had to escape.
In 2003, Hairspray won, the show that did give us a message though, but again, it's a bit silly.
Last year, Ave Q won over WICKED, a show that tries to send a message.
This year, Spamalot won.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for musical comedies and I will probably see Spamalot one of these days and I am already a big fan opf Hairspray and The Producers....but I am a little dissapointed that we keep on going into this silly hole...there is really no problem with liking the serious now and then.
But who am I to complain about all of these shows? They all send messages some way, especially Hairspray. I was just looking forward to something different winning for once.
CONGRATS TO CHERRY JONES, VICTORIA CLARK, NORBERT LEO BUTZ, & SARA RAMIREZ (who has a greta voice)
