Sep 27, 2008 16:55

Andrew was sitting in the middle of his bed, reading. He had several large books stacked up next to him, each written in a language long forgotten by most. The majority of what these books contained was useless to him now that he was no longer a practicing summoner, but that didn't stop him from jotting down an occasional note ( Read more... )

Tony had his laptop case, a full bottle of cherry cough syrup and a paintbrush. He knocked on Andrew's door.

Andrew sat up a little straighter, reached up to futz with his hair, and called out, "It's open!"

Tony pushed the door open and grinned at Andrew. "Hey," he said. "Ready for warding?"

He grinned, scooted to the edge of the bed, and stood up. "Ready as I'll ever be," he replied. "I didn't know if there was anything special you needed me to get, so, um I didn't get anything."

Obviously.

"I brought everything," Tony said. He gestured at his laptop case. "Anywhere in particular I should set up?"

Andrew looked around and shrugged. "You can set up anywhere you like. I'm flexible." He ignored the impulse to reach down and touch his toes.

Tony sat down on the edge of Andrew's bed and set up his laptop. He pulled up the section on protection wards. (Which looked like spider solitaire to anyone else, unless they could see through a glamour.)

"Okay," he said. He picked up his paintbrush and opened his bottle of cough syrup. "I'll set up the wards. Let me know if you have any suggestions, 'kay? Oh, do you have a roommate?"

Andrew didn't immediately notice the screen. "Um, no. Nope. Just me," he said, scratching the back of his head. He turned away from Tony and walked over towards his desk, rearranging a random stack of papers.

"Okay," Tony said. He wondered if there was a story there, but it didn't seem like the time to ask. "Then you're the only resident the wards need to recognize." He took his paintbrush and cough syrup and started drawing symbols on Andrew's doorway, using his laptop for a reference.

"Can they be changed? Like, what if someone was, you know, visiting often?" He turned back around, leaning back against the desk.

"They shouldn't go off on friendly visitors anyway," Tony said. "In theory." He gave Andrew a wry smile. "But they can be changed. Do you, uh, have anyone who visits frequently?" It was important to know these things. For the wards.

That got a laugh. "No, not for a while," he replied. "I mean, I have friends who stop by, but not, um, every single day or anything like that. No one spending the night or anything."

"That's too bad," Tony said, a little more cheerfully than the words required. He continued painting the runes. "I heard you and Liir used to have a thing?"

"You did?" His voice cracked. There was still a part of Andrew's chest that jumped every time he heard Liir's name. That would never change.

"Liir is... a pretty special guy," he said. "But we, well..." He shrugged, not really knowing how to explain what happened between them.

"Sorry," Tony said. "Liir and I were talking about our exes."

"I don't do well in relationships," he admitted. "I think I look for ways to screw things up."
