On a lighter note, Fight Club is an amazing book. Everyone should read it.

To me, the quote means that only by freeing yourself from all possessions, attachments, only after something completely devastating that totally alters your life happens, can you truly be free to change yourself. Basically starting from scratch. Once you've lost everything, you only can build up from there.
