Mexico

Oh, Mexico.

I read of you long ago in Disney's Wonderful World of Knowledge, when Soledad, the pretty Mexican girl, took Donald Duck and his nephews through Mexico and the Caribbean.

I read of the Aztecs and the Mayans, the Pueblo Indians, of Quetzalcoatl and the University of Mexico, of the little islands that are in the middle of Lake Xochimilco, of the Yucatan Peninsula, of Baja California, of that grand old church which holds the cape with the image of the Virgin Mary -- the Guadelupe Virgin Mary, who appeared to a young Mexican boy once, and in whose honour the grand old church is built.

I read of tortillas and enchiladas, Mexican food that Donald and his nephews ate.

Oh, Mexico, gone are those days.

Every day now, I see instead news of the deaths -- senseless, brutal, heinous, inhumane...

Where are you, Mexico of my childhood?

Where is the you that I read of all those years ago, when you were such a proud and beautiful country?
