The Many Reading Challenges

Apr 12, 2020 18:08

The reviews are finally completed. One half last night, one half this afternoon. I'm at one short of 60, but this year's numbers are going to be a sort of weird wash when it all rolls out together. What makes them systematically stack is that I have so many things I'm balancing all at once on my reading for the year. On top of the standard books, the ones I see, and most want to read, the ones I see others read in their Goodreads/Facebook/etc. Reviews and the ones I have to read for school.

I. Star Wars
Sometime last year, I started the goal of reading all of the new Star Wars Disney canon. In novels, I've read 25 of the current count of 62 (which includes the count of six forthcoming novels). In graphic novels, I've made it through the pre-1st/1st trilogy comics & all the ones between the 1st and 2nd trilogy. Which leaves 37 other comic titles (including three currently on-going, and one forthcoming). I have an amazing collection of beautiful, new hardcovers coming out of this, and soon I will actually have completed my "Women of Star Wars" pop series that sits in front of all the books.

II. Animorphs Read 2020
This read has been coming since pretty much the 3rd year of playing Jo, so it being another decade past is a little amusing to me. Given all that Rachel & Jo went through together, I know all the most prominent beats of this series and the massive heartbreaking ending pieces for her. A set of newer friends (who are hilariously unrelated to playing Jo) do a rereading through it about every 2-3 years, and 2020 was their next, so I signed on. It's a 1-hr middle-grade novel a week all year (and then some, when there's the main book & the extra series novel in a week, too).

Sometimes I'm ahead. Sometimes I'm behind.
So far, they're averaging around three stars. (Except for Marco.)

III. Dawn of X
Even though I like to forget about it for three, or four, or even five months, I am super invested in what's happening (/been happening) in the X-Titles since Hickman swanned in and changed absolutely everything. I just went through another burst of catching up on like four or five volumes of it again a few weeks back. I'm super wary of a number of things, and usually live read these through a volume at a time. I'm very curious what big shoes they still haven't dropped.

But I also AM LIVING for the official Jean, Scott, Logan (and Emma) triad/polycule relationship that's legitimately happening across several books, several volumes, and Hickman's linked bedrooms.

IV. Hugos
Which has just begun, and though I have some time until my voter packet arrives as well, it's probably about time I figured out a plan for juggling all of this together, as well. Especially as Hugo's is the one with the soonest deadline, even if that deadline is like four-five months away. But there's a lot on that docket, especially if I'm expanding from last year's list to covering series, watches, edits, everything. The sooner I can get done with the central part, the better for that.
