Me and My Crazy Luck

Dec 02, 2012 14:51

Thursday was a terribly, horrible, no good, very bad, day. Wherein nearly everything that could go bad, did go bad, right down to every hour at work, and my night ending with finding three-four hours peace writing before deciding to brave any part of the world off my bed, to go let myself finally have my first slice of the pumpkin pie Earl's dad bakes for me every Thankgiving?

Only to find the hole pie covered in blue-grey-green-white mold already.

The world had gotten better, but the oddest thing to come out of it is actually the story about my iPhone. Oh, yeah. Did I forget to mention that was the crowning highlight of the personal bad around ten am, non-work related. I dropped my phone, for the millionth time in a normal week, and shattered my screen entirely. The following is the tale that happened from then.

Day 1-Morning: I drop the phone, get all sort of embarrassed and despairing, teary eyed and defiant. Complain at Twitter, while putting off work to research Screen Replacement places. (Luckily My Shadow was all for this as she was standing next to me, listening to me tell the story of what had gone horribly wrong that morning work-wise already, when the phone flew out of my hand and shattered.)

So I located a place, and relayed to those who needed knowing I'd be out for my lunch break that day.

Down: 1 iPhone Screen

Day 1-Lunch: So I get there, nearly take half my lunch break to get there, with lunch traffic and two different highway detours. I talk to the people. They tell me two hours, in less than a minutes conversation, when they known I'm on my lunch break and came specifically because the place said they did twenty minute to half hour fixes, they move me up the line to next. Also, encourage me to go grab lunch from a place nearby while I'm wait.

So, I do. I come back with a weekly special Sushi Bento box from an asian place in their parking lot. To the announcement that the screen has been replaced fine, but now it won't turn on. So it's going to take longer, and I agree to come back after work.

Day 2-End of Day: I return after work and sit in the crazy cold lobby for nearly an hour before they come out and say it is on, but it's stuck in a boot up loop. Thus, they'll need to wipe the phone to make it work. With no other choice, I agree. And continue to sit there, reading Reached. An hour later they return to me and say that they've had two different tech's look over it. No one knows what's wrong, or why it won't start still, and they are going to have to buy me new phone.

It'll be there tomorrow, they open at ten, so if possible could I return on my lunch break again.

Day 2-Morning/Lunch: I call around ten when they open to get a status on what is happening, so that i'll know before I leave at eleven which is my normal lunch break. The manager is supposedly still at the Apple Store. I call again at eleven. Same time. The manager is still at the Apple Store, it's a big kerfuffle. They ask me to call again in an hour and half. I sigh, eye my nonexistent lunch time, plan to get soup to eat at my desk while working, and agree.

I call again at twelve-thirty. The message is still the same. The manager and Apple are apparently in a disagreement of some kind, that isn't clarified, as there's now a hard firm appointment between the two at 3:50, but they apologize profusely for how long this is taking and tell me they'll give me a full refund for the original Screen Fix Charge now to make up for it.

Day 2-End of Day: So afternoon hits, with one last call to them before I lost having a phone of any kind again. Since I never took a lunch break, due to all the "In another hour," I get to home an hour earlier than normal. I grouse to myself in the car, and then I put my big girl patines on. I hit the gym (which is crazy weird, semi-slow without music), the post office, the bank, a store for RCG Path: The Magical Household: The Bathroom supplies, and then still manage to arrive right at five.

I sit in the lobby for something like an hour and half reading the first ten percent of The Diviners, watching while other people do or do not get their merchandise, fixes, etc. Watching the sky slowly dim, and the manager finally arrives, looking apologetic again. Seriously, by now I'm rolling with whatever. The day's better but not best and it's still a one foot in front of the other kind of day/end of week.

He hands me my brand new from Apple iPhone 4S with stickers still attached, booted and waiting for me to set it up/sync to iCloud etc, and still looks horrible. So I'm waiting, and he tells me. Everything is good, except for one tiny problem. He left my Milliways phone case at the Apple store and they can't find it. So he'd be glad to give me one of their Lifeproof Cases for free to make up for it.

So. I have a new phone. The availability to put Apple Care on it (which I had turned down last time). A Lifeproof case (presently in the kitchen being water tested). And that was my really weird, baffling, really stressful, but ultimately near $800 worth of free in the plus column by the end of it, with only missing my case now. Which can be purchased, again, at some point for $30.

Or a sticker. To logo the back of my new waterproof, life proof case I never did have the money to get.

My life seems so strange sometimes lately. But hey. My phone works and all. So, I'm call this is a plus, too.
